THE TRUG CONCEPT

Whimsical art-band formed in France (on a school trip) by Ray Russell and Danny Goring - aka Euston Piret and Pete Tournis (the names were anagrams of 'pretentious'). Other members included Andrew Cousley aka Stu Pontiere on drums and Piers Bailey (his real name) on bass (Piers was a cousin of Adam Clayton of U2). The band also performed as a three-piece (Three Men in a Trug) and as a duo (The Pink Trug) mainly at outdoor gatherings. Appalling bad live and possibly worse on tape (owing much to primitive recording techniques), they wrote obscure songs based on the writings of Kafka, Aldous Huxley and Edgar Allan Poe and one about the former Albanian dictator, Enva Hoxha.

After a brief sojourn in Kevin and the Anoraks , Ray Russell moved to Sheffield where he formed The Bollweevils - a band that only secured a record deal (and airplay on the John Peel show) once he'd stopped singing for them...
