9. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND,
AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG THAT MADE YOU SEE THE LIGHT?
:Heard 'Big Eyed Beans' on the radio (John Peel, needless to say) in
73, I guess. Saved up Saturday job money and bought 'Replica' in 75, and
had pretty much the Matt Groening experience (from 'what the hell is this?'
to 'this is the greatest album ever made!' in six or seven listens). Went
out and bought everything else!
10. NUMBER OF BEEFHEART GIGS SEEN, AND WHICH YEARS:
Knebworth and Aylesbury in 75, Bristol and London in 80.
11. ART SHOWS VISITED:
Waddington Gallery 1986,Brighton 1994.
12. ANY CONTACT WITH DON?:
A friend and I turned up on the first day of the Waddington exhibition,
hoping to meet him (we didn't know about private views, and were lucky he
was there). He chatted to us and a couple of other guys who'd had the same
idea for an hour and a bit, despite his wife's attempts to drag him off
to do business stuff. He didn't really mind that we all wanted to talk
about the music rather than the painting! He was also happy to sign stuff
and pose for photos.
13. MUSICAL ABILITY / TRAINING:
Played bass (badly), then guitar(worse) for old friend Nikki Sudden,
before his drummer quit at short notice.I drummed for him for 3 years,
several tours of Europe, & a bunch of records. A few other bands since,
but nothing major. Currently in a band that plays just once a year, called
Bobby Gillespie's Hair.
14. ANY OTHER INFO YOU WISH TO ADD?
Did about 20 issues of a fanzine between 1977/79...the title changed
fairly often, but was usually of Beefheartian origin. For various reasons,
that is why my surname is now Bean!
