9. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND,
AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG THAT MADE YOU SEE THE LIGHT?:I saw the ‘Artist Formerly Known As Captain Beefheart’ and ‘Some YoYo Stuff’ documentaries on BBC, and thought they were pretty cool (as you would). My brother sampled Trout Mask, and we appreciated its complexity without actually listening to it. I persevered, although tracks blended one into the other for me, except ‘Hair Pie: Bake 1’ which had so many great tunes in it (sax, bass and guitar, let alone the drums). It made the rest of Trout Mask make sense, though oddly the most compelling thing about good Beefheart (that voice) isn’t
on the track except I guess for the spiel at the end…10. NUMBER OF BEEFHEART GIGS SEEN, AND WHICH YEARS:
Too young to have seen him sadly11. ART SHOWS VISITED:
I’d love to see those paintings in the flesh12. ANY CONTACT WITH DON?:
You know Don has this psychic power? Well I was dreaming the other day that I was lying in bed and there were two guys in my room, one telling me how good my speech on ‘exodus’ was (?), and the other was
DVV. He said ‘You know, you should get up’, and as the ‘p’ popped my alarm went off. Strange.. but that’s my contact with the Captain I guess.13. MUSICAL ABILITY / TRAINING:
Highly competent jazz/blues/folk guitarist (electric and acoustic) and a mean blower on that mouth harp14. ANY OTHER INFO YOU WISH TO ADD?
Interests in anthropology and the like, best book I’ve read is ‘ask the dust’ by john Fante, and basically I just love music and it is a useful frame over which to drape your life.
