9. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC
BAND,
AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG THAT MADE YOU SEE THE LIGHT?:
I gambled one dollar on a compilation LP called "Zapped" in 1970. This
LP featured
"Old Fart at Play," "The Blimp" and "Willie the Pimp."
Shortly afterwards, I bought Trout Mask Replica, and my life changed.
10. NUMBER OF BEEFHEART GIGS SEEN, AND WHICH YEARS:
Two.
The first, in 1978, was in Riverside, CA, and John McLaughlin's One
Truth Band was the support act.
The second, in 1980, was at the Whisky-a-go-go in LA.
11. ART SHOWS VISITED:
At the end of the Whisky gig, DV sat on the stage and drew the audience
while the band members
packed up their gear. He sat sketching us all for several minutes.
When he stood up, I called out
"Don, would you show us your drawing?" He obliged. I don't know if
this counts as a DV art show,
or as personal contact, but it was unforgettable, just like the music.
12. ANY CONTACT WITH DON?:
See answer to #11. don't like to bother famous people,
especially ones who seem concerned with privacy, as DV clearly
does.
13. MUSICAL ABILITY / TRAINING:I am selftaught on guitar. I play
with my own trio (guitar/turntables/saxophone), and we do covers of three
DV tunes,
"The Dust Blows Forward 'n' the Dust Blows Back," "Orange CLaw Hammer"
and "Bills Corpse."
14. ANY OTHER INFO YOU WISH TO ADD?:
In 1970, as a junior in high school, I brought Trout Mask to a party.
I put on side one.
In the middle of "Dachau Blues," the host took the record off, handed
it to me,
and insisted that I leave immediately!
