THE MARTELLOS
Psychedelic avant rock improvisers bringing together former
members of Lester and the Swampies with former
Wailing Snail and Hot Zob
, Benjamin Horrendous. The line-up consisted of Steve Payne (vocals),
guitarist Paul Wickens (aka Fast Paul Table), fellow Warm
Flannel , Nick Kenward (aka Zark Starfish) and Benjamin Horrendous
on bass. The Martellos (presumably named after the so-called martello forts
built along the Sussex coast to propel invasion by Napoleon) played covers
as well as originals written by Paul and Ben. Several songs were vehicles
for Paul's stratospheric guitar solos...'like fireworks going off - light
the touch paper...and stand well back'.
Ben recalls:
"In the Zobs we had a strict 'no drugs' policy. You had
to be straight to play that fast and tight. The Martellos had a 'drugs'
policy. When we had a gig, we'd vow not to smoke all day, and then share
a fat joint just before we went on stage."
