ONE THOUSAND VIOLINS
The ultimate indie saddo jingly jangly none hit wonders? "If I Were A Bullet" had these great lyrics:

"I bought a big black book to write my whole life down
Then held my head in shame with frozen hands
No - one to look my best for
Nothing to wash my hair for...."

ONLY ONES
The only ones who sounded like this. On paper it was a non - starter. Peter Perretts post punk pathos aligned with John Perrys retro guitar posturings, yet they made some truly wonderful music.
Perrett has a beautiful drawling forlorn voice, and a great sense of melody. I always find myself singing along to the elegantly wasted dirges. The songs could either be about lost love or hard drugs, (most likely both). You can tell by the titles they're not happy bunnies, e.g. "Breaking Down", "Creature of Doom", "No Peace for the Wicked", "Curtains for You", "Why Don't you Kill Yourself?", "Big Sleep", "River of No Return" etc. etc.
Saw them at the Top Rank, Brighton. They were excellent. I kept shouting for "No Peace For the Wicked", with its gorgeous opening line
"Why do I go through these deep emotional traumas?..."
Which they eventually did play.
Essential
"Lovers Of Today" single, "Only Ones", "Even Serpents Shine", and "Baby's Got a Gun" l.p.s.

YOKO ONO
I much prefer her primal screaming excursions to Lennons drippy peace  ballads.
Essential
"Don't Worry Kyoto, Mummy's Only Looking for a Hand in the Snow", "Open Your Box" and "Walking on Thin Ice" .
