PAINKILLER Three masters of the extreme. John Zorn, bassist Bill Laswell,
and ex Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris. Sound
just as you would expect, i.e. great.
Essential "Guts of a Virgin" and "Buried Secrets" l.p.s.
PASTELS "Breaking Lines" showed all the other indie jangle bands how it should
be done.
PINK FLOYD When I was about 14 I thought they were the bees knees. I still have
a secret soft spot for the early stuff , up to "Umma Gumma". They deserve
some respect for pioneering rock improvisation, although I freely admit
they could be bombastic and overblown. Saw them at Knebworth when Beefheart
was there, but by then they'd got too pompous, and we left before they'd
finished.
IGGY POP Self destructive "Godfather of Punk", who somehow survived to tell
the tale. Great voice. Iggy was born to perform. He never gave less than
100% to the audience. Saw him at the Top Rank Brighton.. He did all his
well known stunts, i.e. stripped to the waist, flashing his bum, hitting
himself with the mike, diving into the audience to be caught and held aloft
etc.
Essential "The Idiot", "Lust for Life" l.p.s., "I'm Bored" single.
http://www.virginrecords.com/iggy_pop/ PRIMAL SCREAM Preferred them in their jingly jangly phase, when they had shimmering
guitars and beautiful vocal cadences.
Essential "Velocity Girl" e.p., "Sonic Flower Groove" l.p.
PRIMITIVES Near perfect Pop.. Kinda like Ramones meets
Jesus and Mary Chain with Debbie Harry
vocals. Saw them at Brighton Poly. What a beautiful noise they made. "Stop
Killing Me" is one of my favourite ever records.
Essential "Really Stupid" and "Stop Killing Me" e.p.s, "Primitives" l.p.
PUBLIC IMAGE LTD The early stuff when Jah Wobble was on
board was incredible, really groundbreaking, unlike anything heard before.
Lydons rasping voice, used at last to intelligent poetic effect, Keith
Levines metallic guitar shards, all underpinned by Wobbles monstrous loping
bass lines.
Essential "Public Image" and "Flowers Of Romance" singles, "P.I.L." and "Metal
Box/2nd Edition" l.p.s..
