McCartney's Dead movie - London premiere 1996Terrapin Station - neither aquarium nor metro station as speculated in these pages. A former truck station, converted to art gallery with bar and stage to make a very comfortable relaxed environment for the 250+ who came. The art on the walls plus the GD spreads and accoutrements, lights and fractals, excellent sound and acoustics, together with the people, made it all feel just great - as usual.
FRANCE -TERRAPIN STATION, PARIS, 26 APRIL 1997
Bill Giles <bgiles@pratique.fr>Pied Tendre (acoustic Cousin Medard) opened with an upbeat series of self-penned songs. Les Ewoks too played a fine set, particularly Dark Star which took the Live Dead themes, laid back and elaborated them. Hard to Handle with a spot-on Bears Choice solo was very hot too.
Can't really comment on the music from the vantage point of the stage on Deadicace's 2 1/2 hour set, but everyone seemed to be havin a real good real good time. Blues for Allah, where the 'E333' saxophone sextet honked their way through the crowd out of Space, and then played a superb arrangement of the tune (by Jean-Michel Laugier - those harmonies!) with percussive additions from Eric Cougrand on a baby Beast, was a real treat. E333 colours more than your food...
Les Brelouze took the stage sometime after 3a.m. with an energetic set - sorry, don't recall details.
For the musicians, this Parisian scene is nice to be part of. Apart from the pleasures of rehearsing and performing, keeping the music and its spirit alive, people move about to resource the scene. Eric Cougrand drummed for Les Ewoks and Les Brelouze; Charles Jannic plays bass for Deadicace and Les Brelouze; I sat in to add a few organ twirls to Les Ewoks' Dark Star; Patrick T inspired E333 to rehearse and perform Blues for Allah, and regularly sits in with Deadicace on flute and sax, while Californian Mike (Lost Saylor) Berke sat in on guitar throughout the Deadicace set, adding some fine leads and twangy textures. Meantime the organisers, Alex and Philos, continue to put in a lot of energy to keep the wheel turning.

JAPAN- MERL, NEW RIDERS & TC in TOKYO, APRIL 8th.
ian@pobox.com (Ian Kennedy)Here's a review of the "Tribute to Jerry Garcia" show in Tokyo last night.
Venue: On Air West - Tokyo Japan Date: April 8th
On Air West is a cozy venue, fitting about 300 standing with not a bad spot in the house. Anticipation was high as this was the first time many of the Japanese heads got a taste of a real live Dead experience. Tie dyes, some still creased from the shop were everywhere. The balloon crew was out in force dumping their merry balls of joy from the upper balcony down into the pit for the merry makers below turning it into a big popcorn machine. Things started out with Tom Constanten solo on keyboards where he did a 30 minute Cryptical > Other One > Touch of Grey > Cryptical > I Know You Rider > Dark Star. All the tunes were in the meditative Constanten style with Dark Star reeling off into what one fellow called, "his avant garde thing."
Next were the New Riders of the Purple Sage which bubbled along nicely with some of their own tunes and a welcome Ripple. The band excused itself when he introduced the blues segment. The number, which unfortunately slips my mind, was a screamer showing that NRPS holds its own with the blues. NRPS then turned up the heat with Moonlight Midnight, joined by the drummer and bass man from Merl's band.
Rick Danko came out next on solo acoustic guitar. The rock legend sang a bunch of Band tunes, opening with "Mystery Train" and closing with a rousing "The Weight" in which he was joined by NRPS.
Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band came out and heated everyone up with some old soul tunes ("You Can Leave Your Hat On"), a Buddy Guy blues number, and some funky takes on some Dead tunes like a swing version of "Sugaree", a waltzy "Deal," and a new-age version of "Dark Star." Each tune had Merl smiling and playing the crowd as I've never seen him before. Merl doing the salsa? In Tokyo, yes.
The show started at 7 and didn't end unitl 11:30 with all of us that were lucky to get in sweating but happy. I've never seen Tokyo as loose as it was last night and I kept getting the sense that this show was the beginning of something new. I think the band was suprised at the warm reception of the audience. Merl topped it all off by saying, "This is the first time that I didn't want to go home. I had no idea what was going on over here - Japan is happening! I'm definitely coming back in two or three months."
I truly hope he does and I hope he tells his friends how much fun it is to play Tokyo!

From: LostSaylor@aol.com
Having spent almost 6 months as an American deadhead in Paris, I was feeling somewhat cut off from my extended Dead family, that is, up until the Eyes of the World-sponsored Dead Tribute at the Divan du Monde. Up to that point, I had no idea that such a wonderful network existed, and I can tell you that I have been reborn!
I arrived late that night, around the Midnight Hour, but just in time to catch the last third or so of Les Brelouzes, rockin' away! While I got myself settled, checked my coat, got a beer, etc, I danced across the floor, swinging to Eyes of the World. Les Brelouzes ended with a tremendous Morning Dew, and I remember thinking, "am I really in FRANCE??"
Next up was Janice de Rosa and her band, rendering powerful versions of Janis Joplin tunes, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix and a slew of other tunes that kept you movin' your feet! For a band of four people, they had a hell of a sound, and Janis belted out the classics with incredible enthusiasm!
Finally, the band of the evening, Deadicace, came on stage. Now, these guys can rock! Opening of their set with a rockin' Feel Like A Stranger set the mood for the remainder (and you know it's gonna get stranger......) They went on to touch on other classics like Mr. Charlie and Sugaree... Then, indeed, things got stranger.... Deadicace went into Truckin' which, true to form, became The Other One---->Space---->Other One. By that time the crowd had dwindled (well, it WAS like 3 am on a Wednesday night after all....), but for those hardcore heads who stuck it out, a colorful He's Gone followed. Deadicace ended with One More Saturday Night, to keep us dancing all the way home (even though it was already 5 am !!)
Not only does Eyes of the World put on a great show and a hell of a party, the quality of the bands out there is truly good. As a deadhead for the past 13 years, I am absolutely STOKED not only to have found the Euro-Dead Network, but also to find that all the way here, in Paris, France, and in fact, all over Europe, that the music of the Grateful Dead has no boundries and continues to touch and inspire people everywhere! Peace to all, and keep the music flowing !
Mike [who helped out on guitar at the end of the second set!]
I think it happens every 4 weeks only on a local Hamburg station. I have tapes of two shows which are very funny when you understand German. The guys have to produce 20 minutes of the show themselves and they do it by, well, talking. They got the official Yes by Dennis McNally who seems to provide them with new material also. Anyway, the guy's address is:

GD NEW YEAR IN HAMBURGIn the invitation it said something like if you couldn't be in San Francisco with the Dead that night, your best choice would be the pub that was named "Dark Star" especially for this occasion. And that's how I actually felt 10 minutes before midnight: I remembered no other NYE when I felt so much in the right place at the right time. And this is how most of the few Heads felt who found their way into the pub that is usually called "Mayday" and is situated only 200 meters from Hamburg's famous concert place "Fabrik".
The event was organized by Arne Heinen and Martin Roettger who also host the first and only Grateful Dead radio show in Germany "Dead And Alive". With a little help from a few friends they created an atmosphere that made me feel free and relaxed and that I am sure will be remembered many years.
There was a lot of good music mostly from the latest vault releases with a few tit-bits of DMB, Phish etc. thrown in - everybody was invited to share the music they brought for the occasion. And there was a nice live surprise, an acoustic duo called The Wheel that played 45 minutes before midnight and a 2 hour set sometime in the early morning hours. The setlist consisted mainly of GD songs as Bertha, Franklin's, Fire and so forth, but they did a little Little Feat, Stones or Blues stuff in between.
The announcement had offered the night for "25 DM everything included". And so it was. There was plenty of good food and drink and other kinds of goods you may or may have not found appropriate for the occasion. Some of it was provided by generous guests, although the backbone had been laid down by the apt organizers.
Although the participation (some 60 folks only), especially from Hamburg Heads themselves was low again, I must say, everybody who missed it, really missed SOMETHING. Anyway, I hear Arne and Martin won't give up but plan something new already. Well, this time I hope I can publicize it a little earlier...

SHIP OF FOOLS, PARIS, DEC 21st 96
Before Christmas, DEADICACE and Co held an all-night show on the Seine:From: christine and bill giles <bgiles@pratique.fr>
300 people joined the barge on the Seine that made the most of the Winter Solstice, rocking pretty solid from 0900 till 0400. Eyes of the World (no relation), aka Philos & Alex, had the place decorated - tie dies, fractals etc. - to usual standard. Live music came courtesy of Les Voyageurs, Les Ewoks and Deadicace.
Deadicace sets ran:
I: Bertha, Next Time You See Me, Sugaree, Mississippi Half Step, They Love Each Other, Jack Straw, Bird Song, Good Lovin'. II: Shakedown Street, Playing in the Band>Truckin'>Space>Terrapin tease >Shining Star>One More Saturday Night, Ship of Fools, Goin' Down the Road >Deal, The Banana Boat Song (Day-O).Deadicace is: Patrick Coutin (gtr/voc), Bill Giles (kybds/voc), Charles Jannic (bass), Jean-Michel Laugier (kybds/voc), Alex Manconi (gtr/voc), Christophe Rossi (drums). Plus, sittin in, Patrick T on flute and Ian (ex Les Brelouzes) on harmonica. Cosmic Charlie Brian Kenneally came out to sit in too but was afflicted with such severe toothache that only Glenfiddich consumed in horizontal position (off stage!) could relieve.
JAPANESE DEAD BAND RELEASES CD:
"China Cats Trips Band"This first CD release from the Dead-influenced band comes with sleeve notes in Japanese. All songs are their own material apart from the Dylan. Big thanks to Eyes reader Michaela for kindly translating these notes.
China Cats: cd insert notes. (edited)
"Moving on, holding still": When I think of the China Cats, I always think of this phrase from Lao-Tse. They embody this ideal in a most beautiful way: an ideal they share with the Grateful Dead, the band that stopped playing last year.
The band was formed in Tokyo in 1980, focusing on music and getting high. Sixteen years later, they've hardly changed members. They have played many national concerts, went to Kathmandu in 1984, played at the Inochi Matsuri (Festival for the Soul) in Nagano in 88, together with Nansho, and other independent musicians. They have also played many other Japanese events at Ose, Amori, Sado, etc. As a live psychedelic rock band, they follow neither fashion nor the Zeitgeist, but have enthusiastically provided a model for the lifestyles of others...
For a while they lived in a communal house in Kumamoto. Very much on the pattern of American bands like the Dead, when they moved to Tokyo they started living together. There they practised, played baseball, lived a youthful life. Then they found a deserted factory and started sessions with another national band called Tojitennanbando. They lived from one party to the next. Once they went to India and Nepal, to earn money, and played a concert in Kathmandu.
Now, they have a record company contract, TV appearances, a hit record... but each show is still a fresh experience for them: they play secret club gigs, don't play to any particular "market" but move at their own pace. In an almost 20 year career, they spent just one month in the studio and pruduced this lively album. So now lets listen to it, full of the China Cat's power, joy and energy.
(Tracks): 1.Cherry Road Runaway. This straight ahead rock number tells the 16 year history of the band 2.Rakuraku. Originally by Hinoko-Band. 3. Spring Comes (Ho-No-Ka) 4. The Times They Are a Changing (Japanese translation, OK'd by Dylan). 5. On the Beach In the Wind Under the Moonlight 6. Drive to South 7.Go with the Flow 8. Ascension 9. You Are My Sunshine.
The CD is on the Captain Trips label, whose list includes such Japanese psychedelic bands as Marble Sheep, HaZaMa, and Vega Pop; plus the complete back catalogue of Amon Duul II.

SHOTGUN RAGTIME BAND Telford, UK, Fri 29th November
A rare appearance by the elusive, mythical Shotgun Ragtime Band, last seen at the Spiral Light party in Chesham earlier in the year. The band, consisting of former Cosmic Charlies (and one current member) included Ian Whitehouse (guitar, vocals), Bob Briers and Andy Aikin (drums), Richard Hill (bass) and Tim from Coventry (lead). A trance/NewAge band opened, and then the SRB delivered a two and a half hour set. Songs included Jack Straw, Promised Land, Estimated>Eyes>Drums>Space>The Other One>Ship of Fools, with an all too brief Comes A Time tease in there somewhere. It seems this one was actually committed to tape. Ian is going abroad in the New Year but there are plans for another impromptu gathering in London some time around May. (Thanks to Paul for the info.)
We Are Everywhere.
For the last three years a group of us have been meeting up on Lamma Island, located about 40 minutes away from the skyscrapers of Hong Kong. We listen to Dead and talk Dead and discuss Dead. It is floating group. Mostly American, I myself am English and there is a Canadian. The Dead scene is very small here. But we have had an idea for a while to bring The Webs over from SF for a series of Handover shows in June and turn the place on. It is great to find such a site. For now. 1997 and all that.

Trader Weekend, Laholm, Sweden: August 24th
yea we had our little party! What a strange trip it has been. After nearly 2 months without rain, it surely poured down on us on Saturday. Well we kept th spirit up and went on with our project. Unfortunately none of the people who had advertised their coming on the net, actually showed up. That was a pity but still we had a nice "little" fest with a crowd of 40 local Deadheads who enjoyed a liveband which was really special. The guys have been playin' together for years but never went live on stage. Now for the first time the band with no name. excellent music and we kept dancin . . . There was a little trading going on among friends and in general we had a good time. That was what all was about. We plan to do another party next year.Dead Ahead Ted: "Ted H. Dead in the Green, Germany, 9-11th August 1996
just a small message about the Dead in the Green weekend at Darkmoor Lake in Northern Germany. It was all there: kind folks, good music, kind bud, beautiful atmosphere around the small lake, everything very well prepared by Rudi Tewes. The tents were scattered all over the place which reminded a bit of a small Rainbow gathering. Alas, when I arrived it began to rain and wouldn't stop till I left Sunday afternoon. A bit rained out as happens to be the case for almost any of the continental gatherings, but in general good vibes. What I can't neglect, however, is that I seem to have grown much older in these last 12 months than the 22 years that I'd been with the Dead before - it's been such a long good-bye. For me the weekend - besides the fun - meant one step more in accepting that it all is history now. Great that we've been a part of it, but HE's GONE.W.HAHN@LINK-MZ.rhein-main.de (Walter Hahn)
Location: Darkmoor-See, Fuechtorf, Warendorf/Westfalen
As in 95, another weekend in Munsterland's geen countryside. A lakeside spot, away from civilisation, about 5 miles outside Warendorf (between Munster and Bielefield). If you came last year, no more needs be said... and we'd like everyone else to know this place is like paradise!

Tokyo Warlocks, Japan, 10th August 96
Went to the Tokyo Warlocks gig at Yukotopia last Saturday, 2nd set, Bertha, Help > Slip > Franklin's > Eyes were the big highlights. Ken, the lead guitarist was trying out his new guitar that he just got from Alembic. Didn't get a chance to talk to him about it but it sounds SWEET. Because of the summer holidays there was no rythmn guitar which made things sound a little thin.I'm afraid I don't recall much more of the set, too much beer I suppose. There were not many people there that night because it was a week when most people take their summer vacation to visit relatives back in the country, kind of like a Japanese equvalent of Christmas or Thanksgiving that we have in the US.
What I like about the Tokyo Warlocks scene (an all Japanese band by the way) is that it's like a joint effort by everyone in attendence to recreate a dead show. There's your spinner in the corner, a granola mountain man or two, the tapers in the back with their mikes and DAT decks, a photographer with the latest digital movie camera deck or some over-sized zoom lens, and your usual assortment of cheering song callers. Yet, Yukotopia is a small place, fits about 50 people (and even that's a squeeze) so there are only two or three of each element. We all know each other and see each other only at the Warlocks shows, just like the dead scene. Together we create a scene that we all remember and miss. You have to work sometime when Ken, the "Jerry" of the band flubs the words (just like Jer!) or worse yet, mispronouces them. The nice thing about the band is that their sound comes naturally. They play comfortably and do not work to imitate - the music really does play the band. I've been to five or six of their shows and leave each one smiling. The Japanese have a very reserved culture and it heartens me to see people letting loose as they do at the Warlocks shows.

JG Memorial Tree Planting, Cirencester, August 4th
AT THE FAYRE'S GREEN EDGE, IT WILL GROW, GROW, GROW...The Ragged Hedge Fayre (Aug 2-4) was the first in what will hopefully be a regular biannual music and performing arts festival, on farm land a mile north of Cirencester. Will Chestermaster, partner in Wigold Farm and one of the organisers of the Fayre, invited the Cosmic Charlies along, and decided to create his own tribute to Jerry.
Six oak trees were planted, marked out by a circle of flags ("to keep the rabbits off") and a sign: In Grateful Memory of Jerry Garcia.
"We decided to have a treeplanting. It seemed like a nice opportunity to put something in place that would last. Since the Charlies were there, it seemed appropriate they should do a dedication ceremony," says Will, who says he became a Deadhead after an Oakland 79 show.("I came to it rather late".)
The Charlies played a few acoustic songs in the "tree garden", and before long an impromptu jam developed around the site. Various other musicians drifted over and joined in, along with a childrens procession, and the ritual for a select group of Heads spilled over into the festival at large.
Will hopes that at least one of the saplings will make it through to become a permanent memorial for Jer in the English countryside.
This key event in the UK Deadhead calendar took place July 20th/21st.

Spiral Light Party, UK, 20th JulySeventy or so heads from the UK and elsewhere attended this year's gathering of the tribes in perfect weather in the Chesham countryside. Though Sam Cutler couldn't make it in the end, this year's party was distinguished by the UK debut of the SHOTGUN RAGTIME BAND, an ad hoc formation of former Cosmic Charlies and others who treated everyone to what sounds like an inspired 2 hr 10 minute set. As ever with such historic occasions, NOBODY TAPED IT! :-(
Band: Ian "legs" Whitehouse (guitar);Tim Pritchard (guitar); Andy Aikin/ Bob Briers (drums); Richard Hill (bass). Ian and Tim shared lead/rhythm parts.
Set included: Jack Straw, Masterpiece, Sugar Magnolia, Ramble on Rose (nice Jerry-in-midi-trumpet -mode solo from Ian), Scarlet-Fire (LONG, with nice solo from Tim) and DARK STAR.
Paul Mallett spun his state of the art sound system as usual...
Thanks to Tony Willis for this info.
The final Spiral Light is now available from 7 Armscroft Crescent, Barnwood, Gloucester, Glos. Gl2 0SU Tel: 01452 413765, or from some music stores. A smaller, newsletter-style publication is continuing from here on.

Deadfest in Potsdam, 25 May
Pots was great. We were about 150 people mostly from germany but a few from Switzerland, ance, USA, England, Canada. The party started at 6pm and ended around 4am."AoxomoxoA" played for 2h and 45min,including a NFA jam that lasted for 30min.(with gest guitarist Kyle Swansen from Canada).
The concert opened with a "FEUERSPUCKER" -- a juggler who works with burning sticks and also "spits fire".Then suddenly an old man (70 jears old Heinz from Potsdam, the local...freak...whatever...) jumped up on stage and began to dance to the rhythm. It was BIG FUN man.The slide/slight show was also exellent(9 projectors with the trippiest pictures throw images on all 4 walls and the ceiling). At the end of the concert he left a giant "you have passed the acid test" on the backdrop.

Dark Star Brewery inaugural party January 1996
The bottle was dusty but the bitter was...DARK STAR
Way back in the late eighties a (reportedly ambrosial) dark beer by the name of DARK STAR was available from the Deadhead-run Pittfield Brewery in London... enthusiasts included the Dead themselves, and Jerry especially was known to import a few cases now and then.
Profile and pic of Rob Jones and his breweryOne of the partners in this venture, Rob Jones, has since relocated to Brighton, and on 22nd January introduced a new (but still dark and malty) version of Dark Star at the EVENING STAR pub.
The event launched the pub's basement Dark Star Brewery, and was also meant as a Garcia tribute. Other DS beverages (including Critical Mass, Black Hole, and Meltdown ginger beer!) were available.Unlike their predecessor, these beers are only available on draught for the time being. Dark Star's specific gravity is apparently around 4.5, Dark Star more like 5. A couple of Cosmic Charlies, Brian and Mick, played an acoustic set.
