Eyes Of The World/The Music Never Stopped
FLASHBACK: JERRY TRIBUTES IN FINLAND, AUTUMN 95 Setlists and reviews by Jyrki UsvaSemifinal Club, Helsinki October 7, 1995. There were two bands playing Dead covers: Dharma Bums and Uncle John's Dead. Dharma Bums have been playing Dead covers before in different happenings. Uncle John's Dead was a group of young Finnish musicians from several bands that got together for that night. Semifinal is a very small club in basement of Tavastia Club which is best known rock club in Helsinki. It was packed and feeling was very good. Bands and audience were close together. Dharma Bums, about 60 mins Uncle John's Band Golden Road Scarlet Begonias I Know You Rider Jack Straw -> Jam New Speedway Boogie Uncle John's Dead, about 90 mins Box Of Rain Friend Of The Devil Playin' In The Band Truckin' Ripple U.S. Blues Cumberland Black Peter Easy Wind Ship Of Fools Franklin's Tower -> Eyes Of The World One More Saturday Night E: Casey Jones Dharma Bums started about 10.30pm and played their set in about 60 mins. It was interesting to listen Scarlet and Rider alone compared to Dead tapes. They had quite interesting version of Scarlet. Jam after Jack Straw was very nice. Uncle John's Dead started just after midnight and played about 90 mins. Interesting set also, they had some musicians come in just for one or two songs. After their Casey Jones encore part of audience continued singing Casey Jones which was really cool. Anyway, great time, absolutely fantastic. I was surprised to see so many Finnish Deadheads there, and so were some of the audince members. Although there wasn't hardly any dance floor, people managed to make some room and there was some dancing. But it was packed. I burned some incense there, too. Both bands are playing again in 2nd Jerry tribute show in Nov 16. This show was organized by Uncle John's Dead and next one is organized by Dharma Bums. Also the next one is in bigger place. I'm looking forward to the 2nd show. Lepakko, Helsinki, November 16th 95 Greetings from ice cold and snow covered Finland. Snow storm started in the morning of 2nd Jerry tribute show in Finland (Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead Calibration Party) and lasted until yesterday (I mean the snowstorm). Show was on Thursday 11/16 at Lepakkoluola (Bat Cave) in Helsinki. Party was in 3 different rooms, one for bands to play, one to watch Dead videos and one for bar and internet connection. People were interested in surfing around different Dead web sites and chatting in irc. Met a guy who saw Dead at Bickershaw festival in '72. It was again a small place and bands and audience were close together. Two Finnish Dead cover bands played, Uncle John's Dead and Dharma Bums, same ones that played in 1st tribute gig. Uncle John's Dead, almost 2 hours U.S. Blues Friend Of The Devil Playin' In The Band Truckin' Ship Of Fools Ripple Sugaree Box Of Rain Cumberland Blues Black Peter Easy Wind -> Drums -> Easy Wind One More Saturday Night Franklin's Tower -> Eyes Of The World Casey Jones E: Black Muddy River Dharma Bums, about 65 mins Uncle John's Band Golden Road Scarlet Begonias I Know You Rider It Must Have Been The Roses Jack Straw New Speedway Boogie Dharma Bum Hit -> Space E: Bertha Uncle John's Dead started their set about 9.40pm and played almost 2 hours. Their set was pretty much the same as in 1st show, some songs shuffled around abit and Sugaree and Black Muddy River added. This time transition from Franklin's to Eyes went more smoothly than first time and there was a great guitar solo at end of Eyes and nice end at Eyes. Eyes was very very nice. Band felt great about it especially Eyes. One drummer (they have 2 drummers) said that during Eyes he found himself eyes closed and just keep playing and playing. Seems it was more relaxed than last time. Great set. Dharma Bums started about midnight and playe a little over an hour. Their set was similar to earlier show, also little longer, Roses, Dharma Bum Hit (their own song) and Bertha added. They went into nice little Space from DBH, they just came out of it too early. Show room was decorated with tie dye tapestries and posters. There were several slide show projectors showing 60's show posters and psychedelic light show.It looked really great. Room was packed and great feeling. Naturally the show was taped. I borrowed my friend's Casio DA-7 and patched it to soundboard and taped both sets and Yka from Uncle John's Dead made an audience recording of their set to his DAT.
