Manchester GLASS Meeting
Results of discussions - 10th September 1998
1. Green Lane Day 1999.
Green Lane Day 1999 is provisionally on 28th March 1999. We need to advise all local clubs of this date and urge them to include it into their social calendar.
It was accepted that all clubs must become as involved as we can persuade them to be in GLD 1999. We also recognised that having a national organiser (Michael Dyer) to help co-ordinate and promote the events was a positive move forward.
2. Co-operation Between Clubs.
We still need to formally invite the RoW officers from all the local 4x4 clubs and (where possible) from the local motorcycle clubs. Eventually we may produce a handout to encourage the sensible use of recreational motoring resources but we are not currently in a position to do this.
It is important that we try to include open mined representatives of other organisations such as The Open Spaces Society, British Horse Society, etc. in our meetings. However, we recognise that some of these groups have an anti-motoring policy. This cannot be condoned as it is only divisive to our common cause.
3. Maintenance Policy
The approved maintenance policy document is currently being considered by the GLASS national committee. We are awaiting their comments.
4. Surveying and representation with Greater Manchester.
Some members had already recognised the need for a greater level of cover to survey and monitor the condition of lanes within smaller geographical areas. However, the discussions were left until a later date as very few people were able to attend this meeting.
5. Local Social Events.
The monthly Laning Days on the Sunday following the Thursday meeting are to continue.
Additionally an Off-Road funday and friendly trial has been organised at Shoreforth for 27th September. Admission is by invitation only but Manchester GLASS has been allocated some tickets and there are still some available.
Events for Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas were discussed. We thought that a days laning on Halloween (Saturday 31st October) followed by an evening bonfire with camping facilities on private land (preferably adjacent to a pub!) would be a good idea.
For Bonfire Night the idea of attending an organised firework display and then doing some night time laning was put forward.
For Christmas, a Christmas Buffet and quiz on Thursday 10th December (our usual meeting night) was suggested. The Crown Inn are happy to provide a buffet for this.
6. National GLASS News.
The GLASS AGM is to be held in Coventry on Saturday 26th September 1998. It would be beneficial for as many local members as possible to attend the meeting.
7. Local Consultation.
It was agreed that having local people monitoring local lanes is the best method of ensuring that we learn of all modification proposals efficiently. However a full discussion was left until a later meeting when more people could attend.
8. Local User Forums.
We are to try to get a place on every local user forum that we can. Also, where there is a local member, we will attempt to get that member involved in the forum so as to provide a greater coverage of information and to allow the local knowledge of a local member to be added to the group.
