The Surfin' Melons Quake clan was formed on the 8th of September, 1996. Kind of on a whim, really. Voodoo Melon and Surfin' Bird had recently bought Quake, about a week after its official release, and had managed to complete all of the episodes, seperately, on a direct connection linkup game. Their latest objective was to kick Shubby's ass.
But, they were distracted, when Surfin' Bird managed to find a list of Quake server addresses...... the fated encounter was matched by a shout of:
Fueled by his sheer crapness, Surfin' kept on trying, and eventually placed 2nd. And there, or thereabouts, he has remained. So, on the phone to Voodoo Melon he went; and so, they played Quake.
Then some kind soul on IRC mentioned......
A visit to the Quakeworld page at id, and a chat with Voodoo Melon, and the clan was nearly formed..... but we needed a theme. And another look at the Quakeworld page yielded an idea.
Maybe with a couple of notable exceptions, all the clans were really serious, evil, and generally nasty. So, born out of the two team principals' names was the Surfin' Melons Quake Clan!
We don't take the game seriously at all. It is, after all, only a game. Surfin' Melons prefer to laugh at getting killed, and accept the comedy value in everything. There is, after all, an a amusing feeling of irony when a player finds himself gibbed only to reappear five times in the firing line of the same bloke. Or chases someone with an axe, taking chunks out of their back, right into the path of a guy with a Thunderbolt. Or chases a rival with a Perforator only to accidentally slide clean off an edge and into a large firefight, taking half the major protagonists into a pool of slime with him. And then laughs.
Silly clothing is going to be a clan staple. Chances are, the slightly daft behaviour patterns and constant laughing will allow people to notice Surfin' Melons. So we don't really need a clan uniform. But, we have one anyway; currently it's blue and white, but the Founding Melons are, even now, testing new and outrageous colour schemes.
Popular features will include things such as the inaugral Surfin' Melons Lowest Frags Ever Contest.
