The Plot:
James Bond and fellow agent 006, Alec Trevalyan break into a Soviet chemical weapons facility at Archangel. Trevalyan is killed in front of Bond, but Bond manages to destroy the facility and escape.
Nine years later, at a casino in Monte Carlo Bond meets Xenia Onatopp - a beautiful woman who, he discovers, is probably a member of the Janus Crime Syndicate, based in St. Petersberg, Russia. The head of Janus is a Cossack who were traitors to their country in the Second World War.
Onatopp is friendly with a Canadian admiral who is in Monte Carlo to view a demonstration of a revolutionary new helicopter which is hardened against all forms of electromagnetic jamming or radiation. Onatopp kills the admiral and steals his security pass to gain access to the demonstration. She steals the helicopter and uses it later to take General Ouromov (Head of the Russian Space Division) to a satellite control station at Severnaya. There they kill the station staff and steal the control codes for the two highly secret GoldenEye satellites, which use nuclear explosions to create an electromagnetic pulse that can disable and destroy all of the electrical devices in the given area they choose to fire at. Ouromov uses one of the satellites to blow up the Severnaya station to cover his tracks - escaping in the protected helicopter while three MiGs sent to investigate crash, their systems wrecked by the EM pulse. Ouromov is unaware that a woman - Natalya Simonova has escaped after witnessing their crime.
Bond is sent by M to find out what happened. Knowing that Onatopp is somehow involved, he ensures that he comes to the attention of the Janus Syndicate by using the services of an old adversary who was in the KGB, Valentin Zukovsky. When Bond gets to meet with the head of Janus he is shocked to discover that it is run by Alec Trevalyan - his former colleague 006. Trevalyan is bitter about the way his parents were treated by the British (they were Cossacks returned to Stalin after World War Two) and he intends to electronically steal billions of pounds from London's financial markets and then cover his tracks using GoldenEye to wipe all records of the transactions.
After a tense moment where Bond is captured with Natalya, who has found her way to St. Petersburg and was promptly captured by Janus, they both escape from the cell where they are being interrogated by the Russian Defence Minister. Ouromov chases after them and recaptures Natalya. Bond chases them through the streets of St. Petersburg in a tank and then onto Janus' amoured train where he confronts Trevalyan again, Ouromov is shot and Xenia and Trevalyan make their escape. Natalya uses the Janus computer to find out where the syndicate will control the GoldenEye satellite from.
Bond and Natalya follow them to Cuba, where the control station is located and blow up the installation before Trevalyan can transmit the firing signal, Trevalyan is killed in a bloody fight with Bond.
