The Penny Farthing - The Symbol of The Village

17. Fall Out

After a brief recap of the events which took place in 'Once Upon A Time', Number 6 is led by The Supervisor down a long tunnel with The Butler in tow.Number 6 is led along a tunnel lined with Jukeboxes playing 'All You Need is Love'. He is given his own suit back and then led into a massive cavern where a judge and a jury are sitting.Number 6 takes his seat at the chair of honour from which he is invited to 'observe the proceedings' by The Judge.

Number 6 sits upon a throne and is announced by the judge as having survived the ultimate test and must no longer be referred to as Number 6 or a number of any kind.

Number 48 stands (or rather sits) trial in front of The JudgeThere then follows the trials of two men accused of revolt. A young man who represents the non-conformity of youth and the dead Number 2, who is resuscitated for the occasion, after rebelling against the institution!Number 2 requires a shave after his death!Number 2, now clean-shaven and much refreshed with Number 1's rocket in the background

Following their trials they are led away, Number 6 (now only addressed as 'Sir') is given the choice to lead The Village or go. He chooses, rather understandably, to go and is finaly led to meet Number 1..........

Number 6 is led to a chamber where a masked and cowled figure sits watching Number 6 approach on a monitor. Number 6Number 6 finally comes face to face with Number 1 rips the mask away to reveal a monkey's face(!), he then rips the mask away again to reveal the face of ....himself!!

After shutting Number 1 into an upper chamber Number 6 (with the help of the butler, Number 48 and the disgraced Number 2) machine guns the gathered assembly and The Village is evacuated as he detonates the rocket which was where Number 1 actually resided.

They make their escape by means of a large truck (which is itself the container unit from Once Upon A Time). They speed down a tunnel leading from The Village and smash through the gates at the end - free at last!

Number 6 and The Butler arrive back in London. They find the road to London and drop Number 48 off along the way, he's last seen trying to hitch a lift. Number 2 gets dropped off at Westminster. Number 6 and the butler catch a bus and return to his house where his car is waiting outside.Number 6 gets into his beloved Lotus 7 outside his home. As he climbs into it a hearse sweeps by and does not stop. The butler bows and enters the house, the door closing with a hum just like those in The Village, the number '1' is clearly visible on the door.

And so the series end as it began with the crash of thunder and the Lotus rushing towards the screen, the unknown man at the wheel..............

Crash!!Brrmmmm!!Free at last?

Trivia

Several months had elapsed between the filming of 'Once Upon A Time' and Fall Out and Leo McKern had shaved off his beard and moustache so the resusitation sequence had to include a shave and a haircut!!

ITV's switchboards were jammed after the episode was first aired as angry viewers who felt robbed and bewildered by the ending rang in!
