As featured in Silent FlightCheck out the new Purbeck Sailplanes advert in the latest editions of Silent Flight and QFI. My Adrenaline is the model now featured in the advert. The photogaph is one that was taken by Peter Webb in his studio. My full review of Adrenaline is featured in Silent Flight Magazine available 27th March 1998. A shorter version is available online on the Adrenaline page.
Latest arrival Over the Christmas period I was lucky enough to be offered a Calypso Contest all-moulded model. It has now flown briefly and I can only say, 'Roll on summer. Oh ,and please Mr. Blanchard, can I have a set of instructions. I've already said I'll pay for them.' Why is it that it seems in the cottage industry that customer support seems to vary inversely to cost! Calypso has now flown see Calypso page for details
Winter Blues Being the user of a European size transmitter and a tray I have looked on with envy at my colleagues using smaller transmitters in their tranny muffs. I now have an M and M Developments Maxi-Mitt which will take all European transmitters in their trays. It is well made and they will customize it to suit your needs. I have used it and it is wonderful to be able to feel the sticks when it's time to land. Their service is excellent and speedy (mine came next day). If you want one give them a call on 01633 413375.
Programming The Graupner MC20 - Coming SoonThere are not many owners of the MC20 who could say that the instructions that come with the MC20 are easy to understand. This series will hopefully throw a little light on the subject, particularly applied to programming the more complicated F3F/F3B style gliders.
A Tail Of A Third Scale Schleicher Ka-3What happens when you take Cliff Charlesworth's plan, a computer photocopier and a borrowed third scale Petes Pilot? Inspired by a glass and foam ASW27, that went wrong the aircraft featured in this review is the result and the reason for a local shortage of spruce and ply!
Third Scale DG600Purbeck Sailplanes are shortly to produce a limited edition DG600 to one third scale. Initially just four kits will be produced for evaluation purposes and I am lucky enough to have my name on one of them. It is not intended to offer this kit for general availability as the size and complexity of kitting a model at this scale means it would be very expensive and exclusive. It is hard to ignore the fact that scale models are getting bigger and bigger - a trend set by modellers on the continent - and there is no denying that the larger the model the more relist- ic it appears in flight. At one third scale and with extension wingtips fitted the DG600 will measure up at 6 metre wingspan and promises to be truly awesome in flight. More details as soon as they are available. Estimated specifications are:
Fuselage length 90.5 ins Wingspan 15ft 2in Wing area 14.1 sq ft Weight 14 - 18lbs
Adrenaline PlusA second Adrenaline kit has been acquired to investigate the practicality of installing four servos in the wings. This idea inspired by an American design by world champion F3B pilot Daryl Perkins -The Whip - will allow crow braking to be used for landing and also allow full variable camber of the wing to be utilised during pylon turns, theoretically resulting in decreased drag. Visit the Adrenaline Plus+ page for details
Schleicher Ka-6As soon as the ASW 27's and the Adrenaline are finished construction will start on a 1:3.6 scale Schleicher Ka-6. The fuselage only (from a Rodelmodell kit) was bought cheaply at a club bring and buy.
Bryan HP-18As if I hadn't got enough to build I've also now got a Pat Teakle (West Mendip Sailplanes) HP-18 kit (from the same club bring and buy). It is a basic kit providing glass fuselage, foam wings and tails, brief instructions and not a lot else. See the HP-18 page for further details.
Sagitta Project Two
Another kit! Visit the Sagitta page for info and updates.
ASW27 First Flights (almost)The first of the ASW27s (Peter Webbs) has flown on Bunster Hill near Ilam in Derbyshire. All went well untill Peter deployed the brakes to test them. One of them refused to go back in. What happened next? Well Peter gave me the transmitter! The first thing was to put the nose down to gain some speed, re-trim for straight and level on rudder, gain some height and land. Panic focuses the mind and the touchdown was perfect. The postmortem showed that the bowden cable to the brake was flexing (now fixed with a little solder) Hopefully future flights will be less traumatic. The second (Colin Watts) has also flown. See Flying-ASW27 for more details
