MATT WATES WITH JOHN COLIANNI TRIO
Matt, alto sax. John Colianni, piano. John (Bucky) Pizzarelli, guitar. Phil Flannagan, bass.

'Matt Wates is a performer of boundless ability' (Crescendo). 'A truly remarkable young British saxophonist' (Dave Jelly, Observer). 'The most swinging alto player on both sides of the Atlantic' (Duncan Lamont). 'John Colianni has a command of the instrument and a feel for swing and jazz that few young players have. When he toured the world with me we were able to make great music together' (Lionel Hampton). New Jersey born Bucky Pizzarelli worked for NBC for ten years and toured regularly with Vaughn Monroe then became a staff man for Bobby Rosengarden. In the seventies he toured with Benny Goodman and since worked with Bob Wilber and Bobby Hackett. No background is available on bassist Phil Flannagan but he has to be special to be working with this lot and we are very fortunate that a quartet of this quality has agreed to come to our club.

HARRY BECKETT QUARTET PLUS SPECIAL GUEST CHRIS BISCOE
Harry, trumpet/flugel. Chris, saxes/alto clarinet. Fred Thelonius Baker, electric bass. Alastair Gavin, piano. Tony March, drums.

'Beautifully constructed, inventive and emotion packed, Beckett plays with natural lyricism' (Jazz Journal International). 'He must be about the most melodic brass player in the country' (Guardian). 'Chris Biscoe has become one of the most distinctive improvisers on the European scene, his melodic lines are tales of the unexpected' (Guardian). The rhythm section has credits too numerous to mention here but rest assured it's one of the best around.

CRAIG MILVERTON QUARTET FEATURING IAN ELLIS, TENOR SAX
A newcomer to the club, Craig is collecting rave reviews as a pastime and is destined to become one of our leading jazz virtuoso pianists. Delicious piano magic, talented and thoughtful. A gifted Brecker influenced tenorist, Ian is a player of wonderful sensitivity, his delivery has a disarming ease. American bassist Tom Hill has an impressive pedigree playing and touring with Art Farmer, Frank Sinatra, George Shearing and Tony Bennett. Drummer Nick Millward's playing brings to mind Max Roache and Buddy Rich. He has toured with Charles McPherson, Art Farmer and Terry Lightfoot.

ADAM SKINNER QUARTET
It's about time some space was given to this up-and-coming local led award-winning outfit featuring Adam, drums. Matt Jolly, piano. Dan Baker, bass and hopefully Will Vinson, alto sax who caused quite a stir when he appeared at the club with Andy Hague.

SAM BROWN TRIO
David Colton, guitar. Jay Denson, Hammond Organ and Sam Brown, drums. A trio with a difference featuring top Australian guitarist David Colton who has worked with, among others, James Morrison and comes with a great reputation. Jay Denson played for us a few years ago and he swings like hell. Sam needs no introduction, only to say that his own reputation is now nationally recognised through his work with Gilad Atzmon.

GORDON WELLARD SEXTET
Gordon, drums. Bob Martin, alto sax. Jasmes Scannell, tenor sax. Steve Fishwick, trumpet. Steve Ashworth, piano and Mike Edmunds, bass.

We are proud to present a band of real quality and another first timer for the club. Overall, the focus is on the exciting jazz that came out of New York in the late eighties, early nineties. The unique appeal of the sextet is the complexity and interest in the pieces they tackle combined with passionate soloing from an outstanding front line that boasts Bob Martin, the Atlantic City firebrand who was a member of the Buddy Rich band.

GILAD ATZMON QUARTET
Because of great demand we've had to invite him back. His stature, in a very short time, is such that he is already the biggest draw in the country and is considered by most listeners and writers to be the finest most creative jazz musician around. The band features Gilad, saxes/clarinet. Mike Gorman, piano. Val Manix, bass and Sam Brown, drums. This is not a one man band. It is not a rhythm section and front liner. It works because it is a quartet, all listening, all working together. If you are one of the unfortunates who hasn't heard them - do yourself a favour.

All sessions start for 8/8.15pm. At the time of writing all musicians are as detailed above. In the event of any artist not being available, we will endeavour to provide a programme of equal quality. This gives a reduction of £1 for every event except the festival and lasts for one year from the date of issue.
