This is a Sligo chair.
The Carningli chairs which I make derive
the design of their structure from this
ancient Irish chair.
The Sligo Chair is a very rare chair with
a most unusual structure.
The origins of the chair are lost in the mists
of time.
There are several speculative guesses or
hypotheses as to how such an extraordinary
design might have appeared on the extreme
edge of Europe's Atlantic Celtic fringe, in
the remote north western Irish county of
Sligo.
Dr. B. Cotton, perhaps the most eminent
and learned authority on the rural
chairmaking traditions of the British Isles,
has suggested that, :
" The ' throne '- like appearance of this
design may owe its origins to ancient forms
of Irish seating which had high ritual
significance ".
