Hands CD1 cover

Hands is the first single released from Jewel's second album Spirit. It was released in most countries, although the US only had a radio release.
Although, predictably a major airplay hit in the US, Hands never really took off outside North America. In the UK it peaked at number 41 in the official CIN singles chart, and spent one week inside the top 50 airplay chart.

The commercial releases...

The most common version of Hands was that as released in the UK. This included two extra tracks: the album version of Innocence Maintained and an acoustic version of Enter From The East.

Hands CD2 cover With the UK release, on Monday 9th November 1998, was a limited edition second CD. The bonus tracks on this CD were live recordings of Who Will Save Your Soul and You Were Meant For Me which were recorded live for "2 Meter Sessions" VARA Radio, The Netherlands on October 16th, 1996.

Probably the only version that differed from the CD1 release was that released in France, this contained just the one bonus track, the acoustic version of Enter From The East.

Hands Lyrics on the CD

A nice feature of each of the CD releases was the inclusion of the song's lyrics printed on the label side of the CD.

Reviews Of Hands...

Music Week - Single Of The Week

JEWEL: Hands (Atlantic AT0055CD).

The first single to be released from Jewel's forthcoming album Spirit is a delicious, softly-sung number, showcasing this talented Alaskan's songwriting skills.

The song is uplifting but at the same time gentle, with sparse arangements adding rather than taking from the moving chorus.

Unfortunately, the UK public has yet to take to the golden voice of Jewel in the way that the US has, but Hands has just secured an As Featured listing on Radio One. A finely tempered release.

Saturday Singles

If you like the whole Tori Amos/Fiona Apple kooky girl thing, you'll love Jewel's new single Hands. Taken from her second forthcoming album Spirit and led by a voice as clear as melting icicles with an effortless guitar and piano backdrop, it's the sort of ethereal folkiness that has you wanting to take guitar and singing lessons, or at least build a camp fire in your sitting room.

JEWEL - HANDS (Atlantic)

This sweeping ballad on the other hand is really nice. Well, nice isn't the word, more hauntingly beautiful. Strong hints of Cornflake Girl Tori Amos, and perhaps even Madonna (the track was co-written and produced by Patric Leonard, famous for his work with the Queen Of Pop).

Review by Joanna Wilson.

Rating 4/5

The young Alaskan sold 10m albums in the States last year and she looks hot to crack the UK with this lovingly delicate ballad about life and stuff.
