Ang Lee once again takes a bit of US myth - the American Civil War - and freshens it up, this time with an identity politics topcoat. This is a quality item, with plot, performances - Maguire and Wright in particular - and photography from the top drawer. Even Jewel sparkles. Tiny niggle: it's set in the wide open spaces but feels incredibly drawing-room, as if Jane Austen might wander on with Alan Rickman at any minute. Parting question: since Tobey Maguire is in both this and the Taiwanese director's last film, The Ice Storm, does that make him an Ang Lee young man? Galloping.
