Q June 1997

Who's in here?

Name: Jewel

State of Mind: Bookish

Where do you live? San Diego, California.

What song would you most like to cover? Unsatisfied by The Replacements - a beautiful, painful, honest song.

First gig? Joan Baez in Alaska. I was six or seven. All I can remember is chandeliers in the hall and a woman on stage.

Last gig? Lyle Lovett. Los Angeles.

Who would you most like to be if you weren't yourself? There's a lot of people I'd like to try on for a year like Anais Nin or Charles Bukowski.

First album you bought? Pink Floyd's The Wall. I thought it had something to do with the Pink Panther.

Last album you bought? Rickie Lee Jones's first album and Pavement's latest on the same day.

Last book you read? I read constantly. At the moment it's Charles Bukowski and Proust. When I go on tour I tend to take no clothing and lots of books. I'm more of a reader than a listener.

How bright is Jewel's future? As bright as you can imagine.
