The Best Miserable Albums Of All Time

Jewel

Pieces Of You

ATLANTIC, 1994

If there's anything more tiresome than adolescent angst, it's beauiful people wittering on about how difficult life is. Angsty, adolescent, Swiss-American beauty Jewel Kilcher went against type, turned in a lengthy album of rare depth and made herself a coffee bar superstar in the process. Her intriguing ennui is that of a middle-aged divorcée: it's everyone's fault but hers. It's her father's fault she wants to rip his throat out; her ex-lover's fault she's off to the cinema alone etc etc. Cumulatively, the effect is akin to being bashed around the temples with an Erica Jong novel. Yes, that good.
