Ceefax Big Screen Review Pg 543
In the American Civil War, Jake Roedel (Maguire) and Jack
Bull Chiles (Ulrich) fight for the South - but both come
to question their motives and the cause.
Initially these best friends have great success which
makes them heroes but also means Jake is noticed when
he begins a friendship with an ex-slave.
Chiles finds his certainty broken down by twice-widowed
Sue Lee (Jewel).
It's gorgeous. The sweeping panoramas, the beautiful
filming - and the acting by Tobey Maguire are all
fabulous.
Even Jewel is surprisingly good in her film debut and
overall I don't think I could have enjoyed this more.
I am a fan of director Ang Lee and of screenwriter James
Schamus, who made The Ice Storm, but Ride With The Devil
is much more of a great epic than I'd have expected from
either.
