Jewel still sparkles from ToledoBlade.com..."I think folk music to a large extent has been heard so much in a certain way, you assume so much about it and don't hear the nuances," Jewel said in an interview from her ranch in Texas. "I wanted to put folk music to a neo-modern setting so the lyric can hit you in a different way."
Jewel 'tickled' to still be making money with music from FortWayne.com..."When I put something like 'Daddy' (a song about a woman contemplating retribution against an abusive father) on record, I think it's funny. Jewel shines at Morris from the South Bend Tribune...[Jewel's] voice was stunning in its strength, durability and control, regularly holding notes for what seemed like impossibly long periods of time. Her high notes were clear and steady if somewhat impersonal, while her lower notes had weight and feeling to them. At times, it seemed as if her vocal cords were elastic in the way she shifted from held note to held note.

Jewel tries to show she can still be a gem from JSOnline.com...So it was back to basics for Jewel - a return to her beginnings, when she simply went from place to place, strumming and singing. And the woman could sing, in a voice of winsome tenderness and gentility, albeit still with leaps into yodeling or falsetto that sometimes made her sound like a backwoods Mariah Carey.
8th July 2004
Jewel goes back to her roots from nuvo.net...Jewel recently was the subject of an extremely unflattering item in Rolling Stone, which said that she showed up for a show, launched into rambling, pointless stories about Zoloft and stormed off the stage after just a few songs. "That was just, I don't know how that turned into a big deal. I did the exact same show, I did two shows that night, told the same jokes, the same stories. So I just think it was some disgruntled deejays who didn't show up in time to do their introductions and got mad or something."

Some comments from Jewel re the US election...Jewel, 30, who sings Sunday at the Hard Rock, hasn't planned to endorse [John Kerry], either, because she said it's hard for her to discern between the candidates' facts and propaganda. Differences between both seem "arbitrary" along party lines, and she can't tell if either is authentic. "It feels like I'm being sold a pop song. It's frustrating. I feel uninformed still," Jewel says. By the way, Jewel is not a typical liberal. She's against gun control and tobacco bans. "A lot of liberals are against guns and tobacco, but they want freedom of choice and abortion. To me, that's a hypocritical thing. You can't have freedom of choice in one area and not in another," she says. [from ReviewJournal.com]
