Q&A: Ty Murray and Jewel from Sports Illustrated...I checked in under Emily Dickinson for awhile. I had a gal at the Four Seasons ask me for my ID. My ID wasn't going to have that name on it. I didn't want to say it was an alias. She looked at me with surprise and said, "Emily Dickinson? You're a writer right?"

There's a very brief Q&A (1 question) in this week's USA Weekend (in the Who's News section) in which Jewel says that her new album will be released early 2006, will contain folk, rock, pop and country and she will tour with a band in the Autumn of 2006.

Just spotted a book at Amazon called The Best Of Jewel, it contains the guitar tabs for the following twelve Jewel songs: Angel Standing By, Break Me, Foolish Games, Hands, Intuition, Jesus Loves You (What About Me), Jupiter, Life Uncommon, Standing Still, What's Simple Is True, Who Will Save Your Soul and
You Were Meant For Me.

There's a 'listen live' link on the page if you don't have access to DAB or digital TV and also a 'listen again' link if you've missed it (I think this is only available for a week).

Released in the UK on the 21st October is the Batman & Robin - Special Edition DVD. Why am I mentioning it on a Jewel site you may ask. It's because one of the bonus extras on the second DVD is the Foolish Games video!

Spotted in the shops today a new 2-CD compilation called Acoustic Love which features Jewel singing You Were Meant For Me. Quite a rarity to find Jewel on a UK compilation! Other artists include James Blunt, David Gray and Bob Dylan.

Working with Rob Cavallo...

Partnering makes for graceful, classy show from Cleveland.com...Jewel left the stage Saturday night not after a bow or a long farewell wave, but with a short curtsy. The gesture, executed in a canary-yellow dress and high-heel shoes, put a graceful cap on an already classy evening.

Singer Jewel works hard - obviously from courier-journal.com...There's one thing no one can argue with: Jewel has a remarkably wide-ranging voice layered with textures.
Full-throated belting? Not a problem. The concierge at the Brown heard "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Soft and warm? Check. Tuvan throat singing? Believe it or not, check.

Jewel makes it personal from metronews.ca...Asked how personal her songs will get, the quick-witted Jewel pulls no punches: "I would have to pay you $500 an hour, and you'd have to wear little glasses and have a German accent for me to answer that."
Jewel has three new acoustic recordings featured on a compilation CD which is being sold in Starbucks coffee shops in the US and Canada. The songs are Intuition, Louisa And Her Blue Guitar and a cover of The Other Woman. Other artists featured on the CD include Tracy Chapman and James Blunt [source: Restaurant News Resource]

A real Jewel from courier-journal.com..."I'm just not in a quest to be the most-famous person in the world or the most-powerful. I'm really pleased with what I already have." One thing she said she couldn't do without is performing live.
24th July 2005
Jewel busy with touring, unsure about new album from The Arizona Daily Star..."I think singing a song live for a good year makes you find the sweet spot melodically," she said. "You start to pick up on the good lines and figure out ways on how to improve it.

Flying solo, Jewel shines at Pabst Theater from OnMilwaukee.com...An acapella cover of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" started the show, which immediately demonstrated Jewel's incredible vocal range and note carrying capability. If anyone was chatting before she opened her mouth, they quickly refrained and were drawn in as her voiced proved soothing and pure.
Jewel tosses out the set list from NWItimes.com..."Everybody's lives are specific and that's kind of the neat thing about music, it seems to administer to people what their individual needs are, so it does have much to do with me, but much to do with them," she said. "I receive the same gift from music, I enjoy being a part of it, which is why I really enjoy singing live. That and writing songs -- it's why I do what I do."
21st July 2005
Jewel isn't in the mood to pick up "Pieces" from STLtoday.com...Jewel laments the changes in the industry. "I wish music weren't so oppressive now. And if I had my way, I'd make a record every six months. But the business being what it is, I feel lucky to still have a career. Nothing lasts forever."
I've just added another great drawing of Jewel by a fan to the Jewel Gallery. If you wish to submit your own original drawing then please email me

Surprised to see Jewel featured (although briefly) in one of the Live 8 promo videos on the BBC yesterday: the one introduced by Will Smith at the start of the Philadelphia concert. She was shown clicking her fingers to highlight the fact that a child dies of poverty every 3 seconds.

Jewel says as she changes as a person, so will her music from The Press Enterprise (registration reqd)..."I'm making a simpler, more raw, emotional record," she said. "I'm going away from what I did last time." She said she will have a live band, describing the lyrics as "cryptic."
Jewel back with intimate show at intimate venue from modbee.com...And while Jewel might be getting back to the basics musically, the folk/pop diva is considering a change from her home label, Atlantic Records. The singer's contract with the recording company will expire after her next album, and Jewel said she's considering leaving because a confidant at the recording company, Ron Shapiro, left last year after a restructuring at Warner Music Group.

One-name wonder from the Ventura County Star (registration reqd)...Does bad love make for good songs? I've never written anything good when I've been unhappy. I write better when I'm happy. You're the first person that's ever told me that. Yeah, it's funny, but I always write better when I'm happy. I can still write sad songs when I'm happy, but when I'm sad, I don't even want to write.

Her own road from Rocky Mountain News..."The record is going fast. I did six songs in five days. I'll have the record done in a matter of weeks, total. I'm guessing I'll release it in the spring. I'm in no hurry. I'm enjoying my time off, just working in spurts," she says.

While the drinks are flowing across the globe in celebration of Jewel's 31st birthday, I've finally got around to adding some of Jewel's latest songs to the song A-Z Also there are a number of new songs added to Jewel's songwriting catalogue which are as yet unperformed including new collaborations with Guy Chambers and Rick Nowels.

12th May 2005
You may have heard Jewel's Drug Bust Story at one of her live shows where she said she wrote You Were Meant For Me at that time with Steve Poltz in Mexico. Well, new evidence has come to light on Steve Poltz's web site which might contradict this story (a little)...look at the picture I see it says 1995. This means we must have written some other song down there. Maybe I smuggled all that weed back to the states and can't remember anything. I think the song we wrote on the drug bust was I thought I saw you last night or Daddy She's a Goddess.
9th May 2005
Jewel's debut movie Ride With The Devil is one of the 120 nominees in Channel 4's poll of the 100 Greatest War Films. Unfortunately the voting is now closed (otherwise I'm sure we could have pushed it higher), but you can find out whether it made it into the Top 100 when the list is revealed this weekend.
Jewel Says Her Cowboy Makes Her Art Seem Less Important...she heads back into the studio sometime in the next few weeks to start work on her sixth studio album...Helping her pull together the album will likely be producer Rob Cavallo

Jewel will be performing with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra at Cleveland's Cain Park on July 30 as part of a series of concerts where...[i]nstead of stripping music down to the core, the series
will offer artists an unconventional opportunity to perform their songs in ways that they choose, with the full backing of some of America's finest symphony orchestras.
A series of eight other concerts are planned feature singing stars including LeAnn Rimes and Seal. [source: PRNewswire]

Jewel has written a short article for Rolling Stone magazine as part of their 'The Immortals :The 100 greatest artists of all time' feature in issue RS 972 (April 21, 2005). Jewel's Immortal is Joni Mitchell...One of the things that I learned from Joni, and that I love about her: If you can tell the story right and keep things moving, you don't need to return to the chorus on time.
Jewel will be performing an exclusive concert on the 2nd June wearing Roberto Coin jewellery as part of a new World Gold Council campaign to promote Italian gold jewelry in the U.S. market. [source: Jewelers Circular Keystone]

Jewel is beginning to make personal appearances again; you'll find two photos of Jewel at the party celebrating the opening of three Marc Jacobs stores in the Melrose Place neighborhood of Los Angeles on Thursday at yahoo! 10th March 2005
A message from Jewel was posted on the members only Jewel website today. The interesting bits I've quoted here...I'm working on a new record. I produced it myself with amazing musicians...I wrote some songs I love. Alice in Wonderland is probably my favorite. Another called Again and Again. Plus I finally got around to working up arrangements for older songs like Stephenville, TX and 1,000 Miles Away. I'm very excited about the music...I plan to release this record later this year. I'm just writing a few more songs, because you never know what gold lies just around the corner. I have also been trying to focus a little more on my writing career. I hope to write more and get artists to cover them and let them work their guts out to promote them, while I stay at the ranch a little more to focus on words.
28th February 2005
Today is the 10th anniversary of the release of Jewel's debut album Pieces Of You. While this album alone has gone eleven times platinum in the US, in Europe Jewel has remarkably failed to achieve a single platinum album according to the IFPI. It's even worse in the UK (the second largest English-speaking music market) where she has failed to even achieve silver status (the last time I checked at the BPI). Are the promotions staff at East West/WEA London/Atlantic completely incompetent for their failure to promote Jewel, one of the great singer/songwriters?

Don't forget that the only free semi-official Jewel message board is the one that was set up as part of her Online Street Team. You shouldn't have to pay money to chat with other Jewel fans.

We're still waiting for news of Jewel's forthcoming album; the official Jewel website is expected to be relaunched later this month. Meanwhile, you may remember back in March 2001 that I reported that a Jewel interview was filmed for the new Rutles movie "Can't Buy Me Lunch". I don't think it ever made it into the cinemas but finally it's being released in the US on DVD on 1st March. [source: Pythonline's Daily Llama]
