1000 Miles Away
This is one of Jewel's earliest recorded songs, originally appearing in 1994 on her promo tape Shiva Diva Doo Wop which she handed out prior to her gigs in San Diego coffee houses. It was recorded again in July 1996 as part of the Bearsville Sessions for her abandoned second album (provisionally titled Fritz Creek Store). It finally got its official release on Jewel's 6th studio album Goodbye Alice In Wonderland.

Jewel says:
I was living in a car for a while it was a green Datsun station wagon. Leaf metallic green, very cool. I was living in San Diego, I lived in it for about a year and the mechanics were always going wrong. I started reading Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance, in hopes that I could get in touch with my little green car, I called her Lucy, to find out what was illing her. And so when something went wrong with the car it had to be symbolic. So if the brakes went out it was because I was having problems slowing down in my life. Or if the steering went out it was because I couldn't stay on my path. So I finally sold it (laughs).
Notable performances: US TV, VH1 Hard Rock Live (recorded 27th February 1997)

I wrote this with Guy Chambers in England, who writes with Robbie Williams a lot. I went over there just to write with him. It's always hardest to write songs about love.(0304 liner notes) |

Jewel says:
This song hurts when I sing it. It was a real challenge to combine a very moody folk verse with really driving, angst-filled choruses.
