Newsline Issue 8 - 7th July 1999

Crew Manager's Bit

We have reached that stage in the season where a lot of members are going on holiday etc. We are also coming to the end of the season. There is only one BDA event left on the calendar and that's Worcester. It would be great if we could get a crew to go 2 hours up the motorway and do well at this last event!!

The BA event on Saturday 31st July is also important to this club as BA support our Head every year. Without such crews at our Head, the event would not be as popular or profiting, so let's get our names down on the board and support the 8km head. This will also be good training for the Great River Race.

Tuesday night gym training is a crew training session and a very important one for overall strength and stamina. It is not a voluntary training session, so be there at 7.30pm. Tony will be running the show starting this week with a fitness test involving heart rates, flexibility test, grip test etc.

Each individual will have a record card with results so that it will give you an idea of your overall

fitness and something for you to use as a marker and improve on as we continue to train throughout the season. The results will only be seen by you and a copy will be stored on computer. This is not a competition to see who is the fastest, strongest or fittest. Go at your own pace, only you know how much you can do. We don't want any injuries.

Crew Selection - selecting a crew at an event is a very hard task. It is even harder when team members interfere with the Crew Captains decision. It is down to the Crew Captain alone to pick the crew. Sean's decision is final.

Thank you to all those members who have helped with various events that we get paid for - Eton Head, Japanese Schools, Eton Boys, Summer Schools etc. It is only with the help of those members that we are able to purchase new paddles, new boat, new t-shirts, new tent and the subsidy for Rome. Everyone should help as all members benefit. Thanks again.

Exeter - 18th July

What a disappointment! Only 16 people put their names down to go, but at the last minute some dropped out and we were left with 12. What is happening? We are in the middle of the season, we are doing very well, but we need to keep it up to have any chance of winning at the National Finals in October.

This weekend, Hydrofools won the Premier competition. 16 points that we would have won if we had the full commitment of members. Don't let the rest of your team members down. Turn up for events.

Japanese Schools - 28th July & 4th Aug.

This is worth £250 to the club to go towards new paddles, tent, clothing and Rome.

It is only an hour of your time from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on both Wednesday's. We need helms, marshalls, possibly strokes. Please put your name down on the board and support your club.

Recruitment Day - 1st August

There will be an advert in the local paper this week, trying to attract new members to come down and have a go between 10.30am and 1pm. Can we please have a full attendance, so we give a good impression. Thanx.

Worcester - 8th August

Meet at the Parade Ground at 7.00am. We will be stopping for breakfast at services. This is the last BDA event, so lets have a strong turnout and put everything in to winning this last event.

14th August - Paint!

We need your help to paint the trailer and paddles. 2pm onwards at Boveney Farm, BBQ, bring your own meat.

Race Night - 21st August

We will be having another Race Night at the Barn on Saturday 21st August. It's a great evening, fish 'n' chip supper and lots of betting and drinking. Ticket prices - TBA.

Bring your friends, family, work colleagues and spend, spend, spend!!

There is usually 8 races with totes, specials etc. cheap bar, hot food and hopefully, hot weather.

We need volunteers to do the totes and bar and to walk round selling doubles etc.

Put it in your diaries now. More info and tickets from Neil.

Rome

The total cost for the trip has worked out more expensive than first investigated due to the Grand Prix in Italy that weekend. However, we have booked the flights and accommodation and transport at the other end. The club will be increasing the subsidy to members to £90 each, so you will only be paying £75 each. Members partners, will unfortunately, have to pay the full cost which means that another £67.54 will be due by Mid-August.

We will be flying with British Airways from Heathrow on Friday 10th September at 1410 on flight number BA0556 arriving in Rome at 1735. We will need to be there at 12pm. We are sorting out whether we can get a minibus to take us all together, so watch this space for more info.

The returning flight on Sunday 12th September is at 1835 from Leonardo Da Vinci airport, Rome on flight number BA0557, arriving at Heathrow at 2020.

Due to the races estimated to finish at 4.30pm on the Sunday, we will need to have everything ready to leave by 5.00pm. The airport is only 20 minutes away, so it is a bit of a rush on the way back -unfortunately, this is the last flight back.

All accommodation is booked. For those single guys, we have booked a triple bedded room and a 4 bedded room, so you will have to sort out who snores between yourselves!

The rooms have a shower and toilet, bed linen, towels and fridge are supplied. There is a supermarket on the site together with bar & restaurants.

Breakfast is from 7am to 9am and includes, 4 slices of bread, 2 portions of butter and jam, 1 portion of spreading cheese, milk, tea or coffee.

We will be picked up at the airport on Friday afternoon and taken to the campsite. We will be staying at the site on the Friday night. There is plenty to do, restaurants, bars, disco, beach, swimming etc.

On the Saturday morning we will be picked up by coach and taken to the Regatta site. We will not be racing until the afternoon, so we will be going into the centre of Rome. The Regatta site is in Rome so we will be returning straight there, so bring your kit etc. with you. There is a party at the Regatta site on Saturday evening, so we will have a quick shower and change back at our site and be picked up by coach again to take us to/from the party.

The coach will pick us up on Sunday morning to take us to the Regatta, we will need to be checked out of the rooms by then as we will be going to the airport after racing finishes.

So, please pay your final instalments by the end of July and partner's by the middle of August.

Flights have now been paid for, so if there are any changes you will either lose your money or face further charges.

Make sure that you have a valid passport - you can no longer get 1 year passports, so check this out now before you go. The Post Office can renew your passport if it has expired within 2 years.
