His early education was very troubled, due to the civil wars. Suprisingly, he remained a Protestant, despite the urgings of his family to convert to Catholicism.
Charles II accepted the Solemn League and Covenant in order to garner support from Scotland for an invasion of England.
The Scottish lost at Dunbar (1650), and Charles' invasion was finally defeated at Worcester the following year.
Charles fled to France, where he remained until 1660. He returned to England at the invitation of parliament, and was accepted as king so long as parliament remained powerful.
He married Catherine of Braganza, daughter of the king of Portugal.
