A member of parliament, he was one of those who presented Charles I with a list of the reasons that the people were unhappy with his rule.
When the civil wars began, he commanded an army in the North. This he continued to do until 1644, when he was forced to resign his comission by the Self- Denying Ordinance.
Fairfax was killed in an accident before the conclusion of the wars.
