He fought throughout the wars, rising through the ranks to major-general. He battled bravely at Marston Moor, when the royalists were badly beaten.
Lambert was Oliver Cromwell's second-in-command during the Scottish campaign of 1650-51, and helped defeat Charles II at Worcester.
After the wars he played a key role in politics, but was jailed after the restoration. He died in imprisonment.
