Sir Phillip Stapleton

Portrait of Phillip Stapleton. Born: 1603
Died: 1647, Calais
Allegiance: Parliamentarian
Position: Cavalry commander

Stapleton was an MP, and supported the parliamentarian cause from the outbreak of war.

He fought well at Edgehill, avoiding being caught in the initial charge by the royalists, and staying on the field to support the infantry.

Stapleton faced Prince Rupert at the first battle of Newbury , but after repelling two charges was routed on the third. His men were saved by the supporting infantry and the narrow lanes that they fled through.

He was one of parliament's better cavalry commanders, but was forced to relinquish his command due to the self-denying ordinance.

Stapleton opposed the take over of the army, and fled the country in 1647, however he died later that year.
