Position: Lieutenant-General, Earl of Rochester

Wilmot was the younger son of 1st Viscount Wilmot, an Irish lord.

He had five years experience in the Dutch army, ending in 1640, before the civil wars began.

Wilmot joined Charles I at the start of the war, and served as an officer in the cavalry. He distinguished himself at Roundway Down, but in 1644 was dismissed from the army and exiled for supposedly plotting to depose Charles I.

Finding favour with Charles II, Wilmot returned to England and fought at Worcester. After the defeat, he accompanied Charles as he sought passage to France.
