I seem to receive alot of emails from people looking for certain people that they went to school with or perhaps are related to and have lost touch with over the years. So I have decided to start this page in the hope that it will help people get in touch!!
So if you wish to look for someone or just want to ask if anyone remembers you, drop me an email and I will put it up for you!!!
Hello there!
I was so pleased to find your web site because of the happy childhood memories it stirred up ! Although I was born in 1966, I can remember the Ferry link, New Brighton baths and all the gift shops which lined Victoria road.
My family are from New Brighton and I lived in Cambridge Road and went to school in Vaughan Road. My G Grandmother 'Nance' Williams (later Rainford) was an integral part of the 'dancing scene' in New Brighton during the 20's - 30's.
I have a very basic web site for Family Tree purposes which, if anyone remembers 'Nance' from the Grovsenor Ballroom days, they can see a photo of her here.
Keep up the good work!
Best Wishes

Brilliant Diane,
Its taken a little while to clear the Mersey Mist from my eyes. Here goes Ken Berry here ex Hornsey Rd. Breckfield Rd North and now NZ for 45yrs. They tried to educate me at Anfield Rd, St. Margaret's and the city School of Art Also at McTaggart's Marine School. New Brighton was paradise the swimming pool, there used to be a guy who dived off the top board, he had lost both his legs just below the hips. He went into the water like a bullet. That would be after the war. Then dancing at the Tower Ballroom in the early 50's with Pat Gray. Used to wave to my grandfather he was skipper on the Bramley Moore tug. Anyone from the school days Enid Miles, Pat Veitch, Roy Maxwell give me a line.

Hi Diane
Great site.
I keep on looking but I still can't find anyone I know. I will have to send you an e-mail to put up on your pages.
How about:
Does anyone remember George York. Born 1947, in Wallasey and still here! Went to St Georges Road School in 1952. Then to what was then Wallsey Technical School in Mosslands Drive. Left in 1965. Went to work at Littlewoods in Liverpool till 1970. Joined Vauxhalls 1971 and left 1975. Joined Merseyside Fire Brigade August 1975. I am still a fireman (and happy) and retire 29 April 2002.

A fantastic site. I have lived in Wallasey all my life. Born in Highfield, Mill Lane in 1947. Still here and enjoying it. I ended up joining the Fire Brigade in 1975. I always look at your site hopeing to see someone I know.

Thanks for the e-mail Diane. I have recalled many more memories about New Brighton - singing in the theatre there (not Floral Pavilion) for festival of Britain School Choirs. Also about Wilkie's Fair and Circus.
However I would like to know if the Bob Taylor from Canada is the Robert Taylor I met at the 'teenage dance' in Liscard (can't remember the name).
I lived in Wright Street and he lived somewhere off King Street.
I would also like to know if anyone remembers Demesne Street and the old lady who kept a very small, very dark shop there selling pop and ice-cream.
Very best wishes
Jan (Jeanette McDonald), Jan@jkinrade.fsnet.co.uk
I'm trying to trace a person I knew many years ago - about 1960. Her
name was Ann Byrne and she lived in Albermarle
Road, Seacombe, Wallasey. She was profoundly deaf and at the
time she was a pupil at the Royal Liverpool School for the Deaf. Her
father, I remember, was an inspector on the buses, As Ann probably
married and changed her name I realise that this is a shot in the
dark. If anyone can assist I would be most grateful.
Many thanks

Dear diane.
I,m looking for my family on mother side. I was in New Br. first time 1961.(I'm 48 now.) my mother was from wallasey she met my father in the war2. my father was norwegian.. I;m looking for my cousin Bill Lomax and his sister Ivon. they are from New Brighton. Can you help? the mother name was Pat. The house was near the park with the clock in flowers. I remember there vas donkeys in the same road and a bank on the corner down the main road I hope you understand my writhing.
Yours sincerely Ronald. (NORWAY). ronald.thorbjornsen@va.telia.no
Wonderful website - brought back so many memories. I even found someone my mother knew on your pages. I lived in Dalmorton Road until 1972 (was Elinor Rennie then - does anyone remember my parents Jim and Mary?). I well remember New Brighton bathing pool and was so sad to find it had gone. It was the place to be seen despite the goose pimples. I even remember distantly the football just over the wall of our garden, all to quickly replaced by the hideous roar of the go-karts. The fairground and little zoo were fun to visit, though I know it would not pass inspections as suitable places to keep animals now. I spent many happy hours exploring the rock pools on the shore, well let's face it there was hardly any sand, or climbing the red and yellow noses. Does anyone remember the smugglers tunnels opened up briefly for us before the monstrous flats reared their grim grey heads. my father was a keen amateur photographer and I still have some of the photos he took of the New Brighton I loved as a child. I'm relieved to see that Victoria Road has improved these days. I loved it as a child, all those gift shops to spend my pocket money in. And the donkeys - they looked fine on the beach but I used to feel so sorry for them in their pathetic stables. If anyone remembers me, get in touch please. I shall add a link to your website Diane and I shall be back here.

My name is PHILIP ELLIDGE. I went to the school during the war years. I don't think we learned a great deal in those years. Does anyone remember the teachers? (all with nick names) Nick Glover, Dozey Joe, Sam Bosh.
I came to school from Moreton, by bus, by bike and even on skates! Those days were very exciting: we sat on the swings and watched dog-fights going on above. We played in the bombed houses ,throwing bricks and slates at each other but somehow no-one seemed to get hurt ( We aimed to kill!) Enough reminiscing ! If there are any 72 year olds who remember those days,or remember me, please contact me.
philellidge@picknowl.com.au As you will see I now live in South Australia and have done so for 52 years,
Hi Everybody.
My Name is Howard Davies, Although I became known as Fred at the grand old age of 14. I was born in 1942 and went to Vaughan Road Primary, Junior and Seniors. I left in 1957.
We lived in Cambridge Road, which was then a cul-de-sac. As a very small boy I could hear the Rakers crowd Cheering them on at the ground at the top of Rake Lane, before they moved to the Tower grounds.
What nostalgia the tower grounds. The car park Full of coaches smelling of hot tyres and oil. Then when we were older into the tower ballroom on a Saturday night. I think we were doing the cha-cha (In an alcoholic haze) I left NB in 1962 to join the Army, I now live in Sussex, but still go back to the Wirral from time to time. Also used to work part time at the open air pool. What a shame that has gone. I was stunned when I first found that out.
Anyone who wants a chat about the town that I consider was the best possible place on this earth to grow up in. Please contact me at fred.davies@lineone.net
Hi --- I was born in Seacombe in 1945. Went to St. Joseph's
primary school and then to Oldershaw Grammer. Sent "down" to
St. Hilda's Secondary Modern --- long story---. In any event,
I subsequently joined the merchant navy (Cunard) and traveled for
three years. Eventually emigrated alone to the U.S. in 1964 when I
was 19. I attended the University of Florida, received a law degree
in 1974 and have practiced law in Florida since then. If anyone knows
anyone from Seacombe who may have been around when I was
around or who knew the Pitchford family ( Edgmond
Street and later Shakespeare Road) I would like to hear
from them..

Diane, I stumbled on to your web site and think it is a wonderful idea. Herewith something for your readers to contemplate. I lived in New Brighton until January of 1953 when I went across the Mersey to board MV Britannic with my parents and younger brother for a 10 day cruise to New York via Bermuda.
We resided above the Elston butcher shop on Seabank Road prior to moving to Lennox Ave. and then Gordon Road. (All of which are in the Magazine Lane area). All three boys of which I was the middle one were members of the Emmanuel Church Choir at various times. My older brother (Donald) attended Oldershaw. Together with my younger brother (Ian) I attended Vaughan Road School before I transferred to the Secondary Technical School off Mountpleasant (?) Road and thence to the Liverpool College of Building. My father was a local policeman (WR 22) and member of the SAS. I noticed an Ann Jones on your web site. I remember an Ann Jones who played Maid Marion in a Church play.
As you said at the top of your web page, "Anyone remember me?"
You made my day. Warmest regards,
Ken Thomas, vooght@gateway.net
Dear All,
I have visited a number of New Brighton/Wallasey/Wirral sites trying to find some mention of 'Mother Redcaps' and associated history. Has anyone any information that may be of use, it would be much appreciated. I am a local lad and am interested in local history and the stories about the place abounded when I was kid but I haven't seen anything in any of the local history publications.
Regards,

It's good to find your site.
New Brighton!
My father A H McDonald (Mac) was a coastguard on Fort Perch Rock in the mid-30s when he met my mother Annie,Conroy. They moved to Port Isaac Cornwall where I was born - 1938
Eventually we moved back to Wallasey in 1948 and I attended Church Street School for a year moving on to Oldershaw Grammar School - I was then known as Jean(ette) McDonald.
In my summer holidays I looked after two children for their parents who lived in New Brighton - the Doughty family. They had some professional connection with Wilkie's Funfair and circus. I sold 'do'nuts' inside the fairground for several weeks. I met my then to be husband (nearly 45 years ago) promenading at New Brighton with school mates.
I left Oldershaw, gratefully, I'm afraid, at 16 and worked in Dixons Paper Co., Liverpool - Birkenhead Corporation and St, Catherine's Hospital.
Many years later I fulfilled my lifelong ambition to teach English and now lecture in Eng.Lit at a local college. I remember my English teacher at Oldershaw, Miss Hubbard, with great affection. I have lived in Sweden, France and Greece and visited the USA many times.
I should love to hear from anyone who knew me during my Wallasey years.
Hi there Diane,
Like another of your correspondents I stumbled across your site when I was searching the net to see if the Oldershaw Grammar school had a web page. I attended Oldershaw from about 1937 to 1940 . The school was evacuated to Nantwitch and that was where I spent the last year. This was during the war years and it was difficult, if not impossible to keep in touch with the others in that class. I have often wondered where they went to and how they fared.. If , by chance , any of my classmates should happen on this page, I would be very pleased to hear from them.
For the record my name is Don Johnson and we lived on Strathcona Road which was off Penket Road. I married Shirley Holgate, also of Wallasey, in 1947 . We lived in St. Albans for a time and then in Bexley, Kent. In 1957 we emigrated to Canada . We lived in Montreal for about 20 years before moving on to Ottawa. I retired back in 1984 . We moved to a lakeside cottage spending our summers there , and our winters in the southern USA. Two years ago we moved to Kelowna , British Columbia and now spend the summers there and the winters in Tucson,,Arizona.
Our E mail address in Canada is donjo@silk.net (April to November) and our address in Tucson is donjo@gci-net.com
Keep up the good work! Don Johnson
My name is Derek Lambourne.
I was in the RAF MT section as a driver during 1969 thro to 1979 I would like to find old pals who remember me from stations listed.
RAF Fairford 1969-71
RAF Lyneham 1971-72, 1975-79
RAF Gutersloh BFPO47 1972-1975
Had loads of good mates and would like to see how they are now.

I think Babara Smith's dad was a fireman at the old Fire Station opposite the school in Liscard.
I lived in Belgrave Street and used to be mates with Alistair Douglas, David Shields and David Furber (Building Contractors?) who lived in the road.

Dear Diane,
Despite all the world-wide responses your site has triggered I am yet to come across somebody I actually knew. Pretty close at times. I can share many of the reminiscences of people, places and events but as yet no familiar names.
Maybe this class photograph at Vaughan Road School taken in 1955 or 1956 may do the trick. Does anybody recognise him or herself or know anybody?
Some names I can recall - Peter Purland, Neil Chantrell, Donald Parry, Stewart McKie, Derek Carter, Noel Watson, Philip Owen, Jacqueline Hicks, Valerie Newton, Janet Schofield, Madeleine Bell, Susan Varty, Susan King and Ruth Kinnaird.
Oh yes, I'm on the back row second from the left.

Hi! My name is Tracine Archer. I am trying to trace any relatives, or any information, regarding my grandfather JOHN SAULT. I don't know a lot about him at all unfortunately and my mother, his only child from his marriage, was orphaned at 7 years so ANY information would be greatly appreciated.
He was born in Wallasey on the 18th October 1907. His parents were Thomas William Sault, a labourer and Clara Lee. They were both deceased at the time of his marriage on the 1st February 1930. John was commonly known as Jack by members of his wife's family. His wife died on the 1st January 1939 and his daughter was born on the 18th July 1934. I'm fairly certain that my grandmother had red hair and Mum most certainly does have red hair - although it's somewhat less brilliant now.
Jack was an Able-Bodied Seaman with the Royal Australian Navy at the time of his marriage and at his death. He died on board the H.M.A.S. Swan on the 19th February 1942 in the Darwin harbour during a Japanese aerial attack.
I do hope that someone has some memories of the family. We are under the impression that Jack had an elder sibling - Mum seems to think that he had a brother
Many Thanks,
Tracine, archers@httech.com.au
I am looking for descendants of Walter Threlfall (1864 - 1934), the son of John Threlfall and Ann Linaker, also the descendants of Ann's father John Linaker (1793 - 1866). Walter was born and raised in the Wallasey/New Brighton area and worked as a Stonemason.
I am interested to hear from anyone who may be or knows a descendant of Walter Threlfall or his father in law John Threlfall.
Thank you

Your web page improves each and every time that I look at it,
This idea of locating people from the past is fantastic, I am on other lists on the web and have tried for a contact from those days when I lived there in New Brighton, I have been somewhat successful in as much that I am now in contact with a childhood friend from Carlton Road , she now lives in Brisbane Australia, and her Brother who was my best childhood friend is also in that area,
Angela and Doug Hoyland and I were raised in the 40s and 50s in the Upper Brighton area and we attended Vaughan Road school, I would be very intersted to know if any of the people from that time and place are able to read this message, if so and certainly if they remember us from those days, we would be glad to here from them
Diane keep up the good work, your page does indeed bring back some fine memories

Hi Diane
I was born in New Brighton in 1945 and lived in Grosvenor Rd. We left in 1953 after the coronation to go and live in Crewe. I have been back a few times and the memories come flooding back. We used to play on the bomb sites and crawl under the rides in the funfair looking for money dropped by the people on the rides.
Does anyone out there know where the folks who lived in Seymour St, and the streets around Clarke's stables (were he kept his donkeys) behind Grosvenor Rd.
Does anyone out there remember the Thornton family? I would love to hear from any of the following families
The Bounds (Micheal, Sheila, Robert) Dave Parkinson, John Humphrey, The Evans twins or anyone who lived in Seymour St and remembers the Tick Tock Cafe.

Its a great web site. I'd like to fined some lost friends. As a kid I was in the 15th Wallasey (St Nicholas) scout from 1947 until I emigrated to Canada in 1969. I went to the Technical Grammar School on Coronation between 1950 and 1954 where I was friends with George Valentine, John Hough and Brian Jackson. (I am still friends with Brian here in Toronto, Canada). From about 1956 I started ballroom dancing and made friends at Gladys Bleasedale's dance class at the Grange on Saturday evenings and the Harrison Hall Dancers Club. There I made friends with David Element, Gavin Fallow, John Murray, Chris Books, Ann Howarth, Ann Gregory. I also took more dance classes at Greenbank with Reg. Rainford meeting Margaret Parkinson, Alan Greenwood, Olwen Sharrock, Eddie Fawdry. I also used to attend the Caledonian Club at the St James Church Hall where I met Jean McKie, etc. I married Norma Dumbell and moved to Canada in 1969 where we still live. If any of the foregoing read this I'd love to hear from them.
Thanks for your help.

What a Brilliant Idea.!..finding people you haven't heard from for such a long time...
I'm trying to find out what happened to Pete Hughes. Pete & I were great mates and I last heard he was in France about 1990. Pete used to live above the Penny Farthing, (and then the top Flat above the Post office corner of Vicky road and Waterloo Road.)
His family then moved to a flat at the bottom of Mount Pleasant Road, opposite Hoeside Rd. Pete was a twin, his sister was Melody. They went to SS Peter & Paul's, and he also had a younger brother Michael, (who studied music in Manchester...???). Pete's dad was a musician as well and used to play at the Melody Inn.
Hey Pete if you are out there give me an e-mail
The other person I often wonder what happened to was... Gael Wood (that was your name when you left with your family as a 6yr old from Clwyd Street, to go to Australia) I think you lived at Number 38. I used to live at number 6 Clwyd Street. I often wonder how things went all that way away....I can remember you giving me a printing set that you were not taking...(no I don't still have it !). I left the UK too in 1990 to emigrate to NZ...
I can be found now in Wellington, New Zealand and can be reached on the following e-mail address

Hi Diane!
I'm Danda Humphreys (nee Morris). Grew up in Wallasey (Magazine Brow), went to Westbourne School then Wallasey High School. My sister Jill was four years ahead of me. I intend to visit next May. We're going to a WHS Old Girls' Reunion, my first since I left school in 1958!
Lived in New Brighton (Alexandra Road), then started SRn training --cadet at Royal Liverpool babies Hospital in Woolton, then general training at Sheffield and at Chester. Post-grad in London, then qualified as a journalist and emigrated to Canada with $100, 5 trunks, 7 suitcases and a banjolele in 1972. Lived all across Canada, and in New Zealand.
Now live in Victoria, B.C. (Vancouver Island) -- the jewel in Canada's crown. I'm a tour guide at Anne Hathaway's Cottage (faithful replicas of the original) and tell people the origin of sayings like "saved by the bell", "short end of the stick", "upper crust" and so on. I also write a weekly column for the local paper on one or other of Victoria's pioneers, and have just had a book published -- my first, and it went to No. 2 on the Non-fiction bestseller list in one week!
Hoping to meet up with some of my schoolmates next spring. Meantime . . . if any of you see this, I hope you'll e-mail me.
Thanks, Diane, for this opportunity to catch up with my past.
Cheers!

Hello to everybody from the Olympic City, Sydney, Australia
With a tear in my eye I have read all the tales which reminded me of my youth in New Brighton. My family moved from North Wales to New Brighton in 1960 and I went to St James Church School which has since been pulled down and then went to Oldershaw. In 1972 I decided to emigrate to Australia leaving all my family and friends behind.
I remember playing football on a Sunday morning behind the goals at the Rakers home ground at the Tower, I was a member of the Rakers supporters club and followed them to all the away games. I remember the day that Stanley Matthews at the ripe old age of 52 played for Port Vale in a friendly against New Brighton
Some of you might remember me I lived at 14 Duke Street only two roads away from the Tower and I used to spend the summers in bliss at the fairground and on the prom and at the baths. Hopefully some of your correspondants might remember my mother Beryl Lloyd who was for some years councillor for South Egremont and on the Board of Governors of Oldershaw. It was people like my mother and Joe Davis who used to run the paper shop in Victoria Road who began the New Brighton Community Group. My mother loved New Brighton and died there in 1987 when they named the Hope Street Community Centre after her, I'm interested to know if this is still so?
Well that's enough from me but if any of my old friends, Graham Clayton, Yvonne Clayton, Sue Farrow, Nick Murray, Pete Ogden, "Jed" Stone or anybody else I knew sees this I'd love to hear from you my email address is rlloyd@gio.com.au
Thanks for your site it has brought back great memories
Richard (Elmer) Lloyd, rlloyd@gio.com.au
As with a few more 'readers', I stumbled across your site and after looking at the different pages of photos, got a real dose of nostalgia-itus !! I was brought up in Wallasy and New Brighton (born in 1953), went to Church St School, Manor Road and finally Oldershaw before moving to Chester in 1969, I got married in 1977 and moved to Aberdeen where we still live.
I spent many years in the Open Air Pool as a kid and have many happy memories, seeing the photos was brilliant.
I still have my sister living in Chester so occasionally I go for a drive round the old haunts, I saw the pool had gone but didn't know why, I do now !
I have left messages on other web sites for 'anone who knows me' to get in touch, I often wondered what happened to my old school pals, all of whom I lost contact with when we left in 1969, so I would love to hear from ANYONE who remembers me.
We lived in Clifton Grove, Trafalgar Road (Quinlans Pet Shop) and Litchfield Road, so if you fancy a e-chat, drop me a line.
Great site, keep it up !
Regards

Hi,
My family moved from Wallasey on 1969. I was 13 yrs old, and was in the 3rd yr at Quarry Mount school. My name then was Patricia Quinlan. so if anyone remembers me, please get in touch.
Prior to that, I was at Church St school, my parents also had a pet shop in Trafalgar Rd, called Quinlans Pet Stores, anyone remember that? It was in the early to mid 60's.
Looking forward to hearing from someone.

Reading this site is quite an eye-opener, especially when your name is in the list of lost and found. So hello Mike Colley and Andrew Fielding! Have you still got the Rod Stewart locks?
I lived at 17 Virginia Road until 1983, where my parents ran a B&B, just over the road from the Crazy Golf! I mis-spent my youth at St Mary's College and the Chelsea but then again didn't we all! Some of my fondest memories were the local shop keepers. Chadwicks Gift shop for your Corgi cars, Cookes next door for the 20 fags for mum, The chinese on the corner run by the mad bald woman. And who could forget Tommy Gribbon, the green-grocer and old Joe Newton the newsagent. I was there the night his shop burnt down and so was half of Vickie Road. All now gone in the name of dumbimg down.
So where are you now, Mike Collins, Brendan Carroll, Ritchie Phillips, Chad Raftery. All drunk no doubt.

Hi Diane
Great web site, makes me feel homesick. I lived my first 22 years in Victoria Road, New Brighton. My parents Ken and Elise Colley owned the shops Chadwicks and the Gift Shop opposite. I went to Vaughan Rd, Quarry Mount and Oldershaw. I spent my summer holidays in New Brighton Baths, Wirral council committed a crime pulling it down as well as New Brighton Pier. I now live in St Albans, Herts and only occasionally come back to Merseyside to watch Everton FC.
I hope to hear from anyone who remembers Mike Colley, e.g. Ian Duncan, Carl Nunney, Andy Fielding, Howard Klieman, Mark Kilman, Linsey Hewson.
Mike

Hello Diane,
yes it's a great little site, keep up the good work or 'werk' if ya like ! It's funny how lots of people seem to think that moving will bring them a better life for them or their kids. And it's probably enhanced by moving somewhere with a name like New .....etc In your case New Brighton, in mine and lots of others New Zealand, (all the way from Leasowe). Some to New Mexico and so on. You realise when you get there, that after a while nothing is really that new, its just a bit different but not necessarily better. Its one of those mysteries of life, a bit like where do all the odd socks go.? I reckon there is a sock 'Black Hole.' or a Bermuda sock Triangle. I hate to be the person that ends up discovering them all, they'll stink by now.!!
Anyway I reckon New Brighton should capitalise on the strong sense of 'nostalgia' that seems so strong in all of us who have reached or almost reached mid-life, 35 or older depends on how you feel! and what the New Brightoners should consider is a full revival of a "Theme Town", just like the theme parks. Imagine a whole town taking us back to the fifties, everything, buses music, clothes, schools, actually live like they did, like we did back then. Even have money printed of the old sort, which you'd have to buy before you entered this theme town. Imagine the millions or hundreds of thousands that would love to transport themselves back in time for a week or two holiday at a real old fashioned seaside resort, Fish Chips and Mushy peas.
The old fairground, indoor and out...... You could go on and on..... Its probably not as daft as it sounds...what d'ya think readers.?
