Gary Chapman has a degree in Prehistory and Archaeology. He wanted to be an Egyptologist but instead worked for a variety of book publishing companies in marketing and PR for many years. Besides Dolly Tree, his other passion -- and latest career -- is creating elaborate cakes, specifically wedding cakes as Iced Delights. He gains valuable inspiration for his confections from Dolly Tree's unique sense of style. Gary invented a new cake decorating technique that recreates fabric out of sugar. He also launched the first-ever news-stand cake decorating magazine. He lives in Kingston Upon Thames, just outside of London with a rather wonderful credit manager who has had enough with Dolly Tree and cakes.Gary Chapman's book, A Dream of Beauty, Dolly Tree and the Golden Age of Stage and Screen, is currently being considered for publication with a UK publisher. The book does not just focus on the work of Dolly Tree. Its scope is much broader, and describes the environment in which she worked. As a result, it provides an overview of the role of the costume designer, specifically for the stage in the pivotal cities of entertainment culture - namely London, Paris and New York. Some of the main sections feature areas of research never before published. These include detailed biographies of all the major designers in London, Paris and New York; the first ever analysis of the development of cabaret in London; a view of the development of costume for British silent film; the first ever description of British stage costume design in the 1920s; a unique peek at the elicit cabaret scene in New York; the first analysis of costume design in Paris during the 1920s and the first comprehensive analysis of couture in London during the 1920s. If you have any information to share about Dolly Tree or other designers of the period or wish to know about the publication of his book, please email Gary. |
