Other Merseyside Electric Preservation

Other than the work of SERA there are only two other projects that involve the preservation of Merseyside suburban electric rolling stock and they are described as follows:

Liverpool Overhead Railway Driving Motor Car 3

LOR Car 3 under early restoration

This car was one of only two to escape the widespread scrapping of LOR rolling stock when the railway closed at the end of 1956 (The only other car is now with SERA). Car 3 was one of the initial batch of fifteen motor coaches built for the opening of the LOR in 1893 and was little altered from it's as built condition during it's service life. It was therefore an ideal candidate for preservation in the city museum. The car was duly acquired and after a period of a few years of storage in the North Mersey Goods yard at Bootle (Where the above photo was taken) the car was accepted into the transport gallery of the Liverpool City Museum where it can be viewed today in a beautifully restored condition.

LMS Class 502 Unit

Class 502 unit on main line duty

This is an example of the stock built by the London Midland & Scottish Railway at their Derby works in 1939-40 as replacements for the Lancashire & Yorkshire stock on the Liverpool Exchange - Southport/Ormskirk services. These units served the routes until final withdrawal in 1980. One two car set formed of Driving Motor 28361 and Diving Trailer 29896 was claimed for the national collection by the National Railway Museum. The unit did not go to the NRM at York but instead remained on native territory at the Southport Railway Centre where the unit was fully restored to main line condition by NRM and SRC volunteers. From 1986 to 1989 the unit made a number of special runs over it's former stamping grounds and also ventured onto the Wirral network. When the time for overhaul of the unit came many of the support team were unavailable and the unit was instead retired and put into store in the shed at Southport.

Class 502 at Steamport, Southport

With the closure of the Southport Railway Centre in 1998 the National Railway Museum has had to put the unit in secure storage at a military base until such time as it can either go to York (where space is limited at the moment) or another option for a secure future for the unit becomes available.
