The MOOR CARE,
LESS WEAR principles
... Make a Difference
We have set out ten simple guidelines that you can follow
to help make a difference. The greater the number of people following these guidelines, the more successful we will be. Our aim is to ensure that Dartmoor
is protected for tomorrow
we want you to help us ensure that the level of damage and erosion is limited in the future.
Park your car only in designated parking places. Pulling on to the verge may be great for views, but it is likely to leave damage, even though you may not see it If many cars are parked in the same place, there will be greater erosion of the moorland edge, particularly in wet weather.
Follow the set of guidelines established for your activity. The guidelines give details of how those involved with a particular sport or pastime can minimise their effect on Dartmoor. Currently available from Dartmoor National Park Information Centres are guides for dog owners cyclists, horse riders, letterboxers, organisers of recreational events and others.
If you are following the line of a path, stick to it.
If you are on an eroded path, avoid widening It. By going in single file if necessary. The creation of wide and multiple paths not only Damages vegatation but also looks ugly in the landscape
Where possible, stick to hard surfaced tracks during wet weather.
By doing this and/or using the fring area of the National Park, you can avoid damaging waterlogged moorland paths.
Plan your route according to weather and ground conditions.
Always use gates and stiles to cross boundaries. By doing this you will avoid climbing over stone walls which are not only important in the landscape. but also provide security and shelter for the ponies. sheep and cattle of Dartmoor. Climbing over walls so often causes damage...
help to conserre these specialfeatures of Dartmoor.
