Herzegovina Mostar Bridge
The famous Old bridge over Neretva in Mostar. The bridge was built by mimar Hajrudin (Hi-rude-in) in 1566. Its span is 29 m, and its height above average river level is about 20 meters. Its defensive tower on the righ bank (left in the photo) is called Halebinovka (named after Captain Halebija, from the end of XVII century, who made extensive reconstruction of the tower) or Celovina (Chelovina, named after Mustafa Chelich, Bosnia's governor 1714-16, who also added something). However, originally it was built shortly before the bridge. A defensive tower on the left bank (right in the photo) is called Hercegusha or Tara, and it was built in 1676. In the background (seemingly atop of the bridge) is residential and office building Konak, built during the austro-hungarian rule. Hill plateau Stolac is seen in the right background.
Photo was taken from the point on the right bank of Neretva, probably at the confluence of rivulet Radobolja and Neretva, view towards N-NE.
The Old bridge was destroyed by Croatian forces during the unfortunate Muslim-Croat fight. It is in a process of restoration, however.
