The Battle of Kent
by Henry Lewis
I know it's quite impractical,
To fight the powers that be,
How can someone so innocent
Oppose such odds as these?
It really might be better to,
Just turn and face defeat,
But when has being sensible,
Done anything for me.
This flame that flares inside of me,
This fire I can't control,
It's burnt my boats and bridges,
but at least, at last I know.
You've left us no alternative,
Except to stand and fight
for what we think is reasonable,
For what we know is right.
We'll get ten thousand signatures,
We'll write to our MP,
and take our case to Parliament,
It's time for them to see.
I'm so afraid we're going to be a nuisance
Sorry, but we're going to cause a fuss,
This is opposition in the true sense,
Not what you'd expect from one of us.
I know it's not, exactly what,
Someone like me should do.
But how could I anticipate
just what they'd put me through.
We learnt the rule in Sunday School
to turn the other cheek,
But what's the point I ask myself
in always being weak?
I'm not some red hot activist
I pay my tax on time,
My biggest misdemeanour has
Been one small parking fine.
We're taking on a principle,
To fight for Kentish soil,
Which you would gladly desecrate,
Which you would fast despoil.
We're fighting for our countryside,
This precious piece of Green,
Eight thousand years of history,
Have carved this pastoral scene.
This life is simply ludicrous,
The way that we behave,
Is killing off each living thing,
Beneath the great stampede.
I'm so afraid I'm going to be a nuisance,
Sorry, but I'm going to cause a stir,
No, I know, this isn't very British,
Not exactly music to your ear.
You've left us no alternative,
except to turn and fight
For what we think is reasonable,
For what we know is right.
Our children won't forgive us,
If we blow their legacy,
They won't believe it necessary,
Just blind stupidity.
There must be something wrong with us,
If we can still believe,
By taking out the greenery,
Will leave us air to breathe.
On the CD this song was sung by Stephanie McNamara & John
Herriman.
