ISLINGTON PROJECT

The Islington staff team has now been recruited for the Anson Road house. In addition to the manager, Tanya, there will be two deputy managers, four support workers and one volunteer.

Service users have been identified and the house will be open by early November.

PARTY

On Wednesday 1 October Hilt held its 2003 service user party. The theme of the party this year was Caribbean and party goers were treated to Caribbean music and Caribbean food and drink.

The party was extremely popular this year - far more popular that Hilt had predicted. The caterers had been asked to prepare enough food for 100 people, however more than 200 people turned up. The food ran out after just 20 minutes and the party organisers ended up in a nearby chicken and chip shop buying up the entire shop’s food! The free bar also proved to be very popular, including the exotic Guinness punch.

The highlights of the evening were the competition results for best dressed; the raffle results; and the election speeches and voting. The price for the best dressed service user was Xenia, who wore a splendid sparkling silver cocktail dress.

There were 7 raffle winners, with prizes that included a Gareth Gates CD, a waterproof shower radio and Woolworth vouchers.

The election speeches and voting for the Service User Group took place after the raffle. The results are due to be announced shortly…so watch this space.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

The following news was taken from the Hackney Gazette, September 11, 2003:

“A group for people with learning difficulties has received a cash windfall after being chosen to benefit from a former Hackney major’s charity appeal.

People First received a cheque for £5,100 from Cllr Sharon Patrick at a presentation ceremony in the mayor’s parlour in Hackney Town Hall.

The money was the proceeds of a year of fund-raising activities from her year-long term of office, which ended in May when the ceremonial role of the borough’s first citizen was replaced by the civic office of speaker.”
