AUTISM PROJECT
HILT has launched a new Austism Project, funded by Hackney
Strategic Partnership Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
The newly employed project co-ordinator, Shane Trimble, is currently
organising a project launch day for all people involved with autism
to discuss how the funding should be spent. This will be held
on Friday 8 October at Hilt Central Office between 10am and 3pm.
Please click here for more
information on the day.
The main aim of the project is to provide short term interventions
and to promote more awareness of autism to the local community,
for example, to cafes, leisure centres, restaurants, and colleges.

this project.
LOTTA WORK FROM LISELOTEE
An ex-HILT volunteer has recently completed her Master’s
degree thesis at University in Holland.
Liselotte Roosen spent six months volunteering with HILT’s
Outreach Team from October 2003 - April 2004.
During her time off from volunteering, Liselotte put a lot of
effort into interviewing HILT staff and service users, in order
to help with her research for the thesis.
The
thesis studies the relationships that service users form with
staff and volunteers, their levels of dependency on other people,
and how these relationships impact on their quality of life.
In a foreword to the thesis Liselotte thanks all the staff and
service users who took part in the research by finding the time
to take part in interviews with her or to answer questions by
completing questionnaires.
The thesis is very interesting and is probably one of the first
of its kind to look at the ways staff and users interact on independent
living schemes. Although the results are inconclusive in some
areas, it may be able to assist people with their understanding
of how the work they are involved in influences service users’
quality of life and understanding of relationships.
A copy of Liselotte’s thesis is available at HILT central
office. Anyone interested can borrow it to read by contacting
the Volunteer Co-ordinator’s office click
here to email.
Liselotte is now working as an assist psychologist in Portsmouth.
A GREAT DAY OUT
Gerald West has recently visited his sister Jean at her home in
Leigh-on-Sea for the first time. This is a great achievement for
Gerald who previously was too frightened to travel on a train. Gerald
has managed to conquer his fear after undertaking travel training
with his support workers.
Many more visits are planned for the future!
