EASTENDERS TAKE IT EASY ON BRIAN'S BENCH

Brian and fellow students from the art group Action Space recently gathered in Finsbury Park's Manor House Lodge to open a new garden.

Brain is supported every week by HILT's Occupational Team. He often comes to HILT central office, and gets on well with everyone here. He enjoys working on the computer and thinks that most people are a bit of a joker.

Brain was part of a group of students who designed and helped build a concrete bench that was erected in the garden. The garden was officially opened by Eastenders actress Scarlett Johnson, Geoffrey Taylor, the Speaker of Hackney and local councillors.

The whole event was part of the regeneration of Finsbury Park.

TWO DAYS WITH SHEILA

Episode One

Last weekend I arrived on shift in the early afternoon to find Sheila in a really good mood. The minute I entered, she said – ‘C’mon Tina, it’s such a beautiful day, where are we going?’ We decided to go to the Riverside Café at the bottom of Spring Hill. We took a taxi there.
The café is situated right next to the canal. It is very beautiful, tranquil and spacious. There are ducks, swans and other birds. People walk their dogs there. This is great as Sheila is very fond of animals.

Sheila fed the birds with the bread we had brought from home. She watched the boats on the river and chatted with people passing by.
The owner of the café is a very friendly woman. A lot of other HILT clients visit the café on a regular basis. The owner and I have known each other since my volunteer days. She chatted with Sheila for some time on this occasion. On our departure she said to Sheila that she would be glad to see her again. At the end of my shift, Sheila said she had had wonderful time and really liked the place.

Episode Two....

Next day I arrive on shift and Sheila is waiting for me at the front of the building with a packed bag. She says to me she’s got everything sorted, and that she has taken bread and Elvis (the bag has a print of Elvis on the front). She is ready to go. We take a taxi to the Riverside Café again.

Sheila gets out of the car full of confidence and heads straight for the river front. I go in the café to order the teas. When I go back out, I find Sheila and the owner sitting on a bench, smoking cigarettes, engaged in animated conversation.

We spend most of the afternoon in the café, where Sheila talks with the kids, asking them what kind of ice cream they want and flirts with the passing policemen. She meets a guy that lives on a boat on the canal. He points his boat out to her. Sheila declares that she wants to live on it.
Sheila had a very nice day filled with pleasant events.

EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE

On the 25th of May, John Cahill and Shane Trimble of HILT's Occupational Team attended a Conference at The Autism Centre. The Conference was organised by Paradigm, and was called "Autism and Being Person Centred
Ordinary Lives - Extraordinary People".

The conference was for people who are autistic, their families and carers. It was also attended by Commissioners, Care Managers and other professionals.

The day focused on Person Centred thinking applied to people who have autism.
John presented a workshop called "Filling Your Days With Things That Matter". This focussed on Person Centred services, good transition, visual communication tools, and individual services. John put a lot of work into the preparation for this event and gave the presentation a trial run as in informal training day for HILT staff and volunteers. The workshops presented both at HILT and at The National Autism Society had a multimedia element and encouraged active involvement from all participants. By all accounts, both were a rip-roaring success.

PERCY'S NEW CUSTOMER

Congratulations to Sheila Rush, HILT’s Information Officer, who gave birth to a baby girl in May. Sheila’s new daughter is called Imogen.

Everyone at HILT sends Sheila and Imogen their best wishes. We expect it won't be long before Imogen is accompanying mummy on trips out to Sheila's two favourite shops, La Bouche and Percy Ingle. Both shops are on Broadway Market, close to HILT Central Office. They sell cakes and sandwiches that were a comfort to Sheila during her pregnancy. Hopefully they will drop into the office for a visit on their way past.

HAGAR'S HOLIDAY

As reported in HILT's April news, HILT service user, Hagar has been supported to make a number of positive changes and choices by her staff team.

Hagar has just come back from a holiday at Centre Parcs, where she was supported by Suzie and Anna to take part in a variety of different activities. These included eating out, swimming, and some long walks in the countryside. They were able to visit Longleat Wildlife Park, to see the giraffes, lions and tigers, although they didn’t visit the monkeys, as they can do serious damage to your car! Everyone felt that the highlight of the visit was when the deer put their heads in through the car windows, and ate deer food out of their hands.

NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Yajna Elouard joined HILT's Admin. Department last week. We have been using temporary Admin Assistants for over a year. Yajna has been recruited as a permanent staff member. She will be providing general admin support in Central Office as well as assisting with work for the Carebank Office and the Volunteer Team.

Yajna is half French and half German but grew up India. She came to London in November 2004 and began working for the Women's Health charity.

Yajna volunteers for two other London charities in her spare time: Kith and Kids support children and adults with learning and/or physical disabilities. Medecins du Monde UK (Doctors of the World) is the UK branch of a French organisation who send physicians to work abroad in countries where there may be social unrest.

We are all happy to have Yajna as part of the staff team at HILT. We hope everyone will extend a warm welcome to her.
