We are particularly interested in access issues and attitude of staff.

Popcorn in the Park (Food)

This is a fantastic cafe in the grove in Alexander Palace Park, with a really chilled atmosphere. You can park nearby in the Grove car park, although it's quite a steep walk up the hill. All the food is freshly prepared, so sometimes service is slow if they are busy, but its well worth the wait. It is partly staffed by people with learning difficulties. Caters for dairy free and gluten free diets. Sandwiches cost about £2, main meals (at lunchtime) about £6. Live music Sunday lunchtimes through the summer. The hot chocolate is delicious!

Ridley Road Market (Hackney)

Ridley Road Market is a real sensory delight. Catering for the wide range of cultures found in Hackney, you can find any thing you want here. Market stalls with fruit and veg, shops with clothes, fabric, and music. There are two wheelchair accessible toilets - one in the shopping centre, opposite Iceland, and one past the bagel shop on the side road that leads to Argos. It gets very crowded on Saturdays, but you can get some great bargains.

Britannia Leisure Centre (Hackney)

I have always found the staff here to be extremely helpful. The pool is a leisure pool and so it slopes gently down into the deeper water. To enable wheelchair users to use the pool, we have found using a shower-chair to wheel into the water, until the water is deep enough for the person to float, and then leaving the chair back at the poolside until it is needed again has worked very effectively. There are special changing facilities, but these are some way away from the pool, but staff usually open up one of the large changing rooms behind the main changing area if we need a larger, private space to change. There are accessible toilets and a cafe. Sometimes the water can be very cold in winter though, so it's worth checking before you go.
