The story focuses on the friendship between Bert; an elderly retired boxer and Syl young amateur about to launch his professional career. Bert who lost his nerve and retired after a nightmare fight is bitter and cynical about boxing, while Syl is young and hopeful.

Syl is torn between loyalty to Bert and the belief that he can succeed. Bert is haunted by his past and afraid for Syl's future.
