St. Aidan's (parish pop. 6249), Cleethorpes (pop. 78,000), is situated on the south bank of the Humber River as it meets the North Sea, currently the home of the Grimsby Town Football Club and Ground. CIeethorpes is located in the local government District of North East Lincolnshire. The parish is recognised by the Church of England, North East Lincolnshire Council and the European Union as a Priority 5 Area, being an Urban Priority Area, an area of special urban need, having an Oxslip percentage of 21.3%. It has up to 16.8% unemployment, having 31% long-term unemployment in the under 25 age range; 5.8% of households are lived in by lone parents, and 11.05% of households are lived in by lone pensioners, with 6.3% of households having 3 or more children in them of more than one father. 40.3% of the households do not have access to a car. We also have a significant problem in the area with intravenous drug abuse, and drug and substance abuse generally, with possibly as many as 140 intravenous drug users living in the parish.
St. Aidan's under its Serving the Community Project has succesfully submitted a bid to the National Lottery Charities Board for funding to begin meeting the physical and spiritual needs of our locality in our Church Community Centre refurbishment and the funding of children and youth workers. The grant total is for £61,176.00. St. Aidan's has also been successful in gaining matching funding from the European Union's Regional Development Fund for a further £42,984.00, a grand total of £104,160.00. St. Aidan's has agreed with North East Lincolnshire Council to partner the placement of a Community Development Worker, Ms. Helen Willbourne, to work from offices at St. Aidan's. There are furher developing partnerships between St. Aidan's, North East Lincolnshire Council, Franklin College, Grimsby College and the STEPS Programme in partnership with the Pacific Institute. In March St. Aidan's opened its own computer centre which offers courses from basic to advanced IT to one hundred people per week.
