Story 12

NARROW ESCAPE

by Viper9

I'm not sure exactly which pre-generated level this was, but I remember that I chose to fly a team of Blackhawks instead of the usual Longbow on escort (come to think of it, I think it was Umbrella). For no reason at all, I decided to take the Chain Gun this time, just on my helo (and it eventually pays off). So, me and my fellow Blackhawk take off and head towards the hook up point.

Since this was a massively co-ordinated mission, I was confident the 3 teams of Longbows could cover me and my buddies tail (yeah, right, some of you guys play as the Longbow in this thing and tell me how easy it is ;-).

So, as usual, nothing expected came up on the trip in. I remember as soon as I arrived at the phase line, there is a steep drop with tanks and ZSU-23's galore over it. So, I say "To hell with the bastards, full speed ahead!!". Which I did, I went at least 130 knots on the way in at about 70 feet, working my way to the LZ. I'm just happy that about 6 other enemy choppers haven't blasted my ass yet, and then I realise that my buddies were doing their job fairly well. I remember looking out my left window and watching a Hind come in my general direction, and I'm thinking "Oh god, I'm in for it", and in a blaze of glory one of my Longbows appears behind him and waxes him up the tail with a Stinger; oh god, was that a sight. I'm still cruising forward, tanks exploding, helo's crashing, and I see it. And I realise I'm almost on top of it, so I slow down and set it down. You don't realise how hard a pickup mission can be if you have to sit there and wait for those guys to come running ;-). My guys finally come in and my CP yells "Lets get outa here". By this time, one of my Longbows is still smoking because I saw him fly by to go to his next WP and I say "God help him". I was just finishing getting ready to take off, and I look out my right window at my escort Blackhawk. I was already 20 feet in the air, and he was just taking off...I go back to my front view just in time to hear the missile warning tone...I thought it was me the missile was coming after, so I go back to my escort, and he was just about to take off and WAMM, the goddamn bastards shot him on the ground. I swore I would make them pay for taking my escort like that...

I flipped around as fast as possible, and got my butt outa there...I realised I wasn't even scratched yet!! So I'm OMW to my next WP, when I hear my CG yell (and mind this, I'm already on MY side of the Phase Line, where it was SUPPOSED to be safe) "CHOPPERS, 9 O'clock!!!". I'm like...ohhhhh man, I'm done for it again. I look out my left window and thank god that they are Cobras...no AA missiles for them, but they had just come right over a ridge, which must have only been about 100 - 200 feet away. I figured I had no chance at...wait a sec...MY CHAIN GUN!! I just loaded for no reason at all, a chain gun on this bucket, and I was determined to use it. So, I fired off a few rounds and look as it hit nothing but ground. He was aiming but...the things were to high...so, I turned my Blackhawk on a side slip, and aimed higher, let out a few hundred rounds, and one of those babies were burning real good. I then take aim at the second one, but for some reason, I cant see him. I go back to front view and his butt was right in front of me and he was in a tight turn, running from my Blackhawk. I say "No you don't...this is for my buddy". I give a little tail rotor, and I pumped him fulla lead till I was sure he was good and dead. That one felt real good. But at the beginning of the fight, some of there initial bullets caught me...and one lucky one caught my tail rotor, and it was damaged. Not to mention that my number 1 engine was damaged too. So, I limped over every hill...praying that I wouldn't hit the next one, and then it came to sight. My FARP was right down in a deep valley, and I thanked god I had made it this far. I landed that puppy, and thought "This ones for you wingy".

This is absolutely true and happened in the best game known as Longbow 2
