Jurassic Oysters, England
The beautiful zigzag pattern reminiscent of Venetian Bargello embroidery is created by two conflicting needs: to keep the shell tightly closed against predators, and the need to open the shell to allow water to be circulated and filtered during feeding. A zigzag opening enables a large cross-sectional area for the feeding current while the two halves of the shell still overlap.
