This beautiful photograph is possibly the earliest example of an image made of a natural pattern as a work of art in its own right, rather than as a backdrop for something else. Art historians argue that such photographs paved the way for the French Impressionist painters to depict unadorned nature as art, where it would previously have been thought not worth noticing. We can just enjoy the patterns.
Henry Fox Talbot, about 1850.
