Kilim

Kilim (Flatweave Carpet) Motifs

These patterns were used by the nomadic (shepherd) peoples such as the Turkmen who live in the vast region from Turkey through Persia to the Steppes of Central Asia. The motifs occur in hundreds of variations and in many colours. They all have meanings, typically wishing for protection, fertility, prosperity, and happy marriage: for instance, the Wolf symbols avert the evil of the hungry beasts from the flocks.
