Kyrgyzstan

These patterns were used by the nomadic (shepherd) peoples in Kyrgyzstan in the Steppes of Central Asia.

Nomadism was ended under Soviet control, but the making of felt persists, and Yurt house-tents are still used on summer pastures in the Kyrgyz mountains. The motifs occur in many variations and in many colours. They all have meanings, typically wishing for protection and fertility. I have given the English and Kyrgyz names of the motifs and textiles.
