This plant is familiar as a nice rough thing to scratch your back with when in the bath. The pattern is simply a cross-section of the seed-pod of the Egyptian Loofah plant, Luffa aegyptica with the seeds and living tissues removed. There are four seed-chambers, each of two rows, forming a cross in a circle (the symbol for Planet Earth, incidentally).
