In the Palladian style, copied by English gentlemen from villas in Italy in the 18th century, many subtle effects were sought. There was a new interest in 'nature'. Heavily worked 'rustic' stone, as if rough-hewn straight from the cliffs, formed a massive-seeming foundation for the more refined surfaces found higher up.
