Rock carvings at Alta in what is now Norway, made by the Sami people in the land of Sápmi. The carvings show Sami hunters with weapons including spears, bows, and perhaps ritual clubs, hunting elk and bears. It feels as if the hunters are in a shamanic trance, identifying and merging with their prey. The bear is a revered animal to the Sami, just as he is to the Native Americans as a spirit guide of the forest. |
